    Hi,
We were told by one of the breeders that we met that you shouldn’t use a harness in a Labrador. He said it could damage.... Typically I now can’t remember what he said.
What is the consensus, is a harness safe or would a collar and lead be better?
    TIA

You need a well-fitting harness as it's possible for a puppy to damage its throat by pulling on a lead attached to a collar. (Obviously you train your puppy not to pull but almost inevitably they are going to at some point.) The best harnesses have a 'Y' shape which doesn't restrict the shoulder movement that can happen with harnesses that have a strap across the chest.
