Hello Everyone! We recently brought home our first puppy, Luna - She is 12 weeks old. She's an absolutely gorgeous girl, and a smart little cookie for sure! We are first time dog parents, and are taking her to puppy preschool for socialisation and learning how to train her. We have a 12 year old son and 19 month old daughter and it is all a bit chaotic at the moment. The kids love the puppy, but puppy gets a bit excitable and wants to nip and jump on them - which quickly becomes too much for the toddler. Luna has already learned sit, (lay) down, responds to her name, and we are working on leave it. Toilet training is a challenge, as despite our regular trips outside Luna will eliminate as soon as she gets back inside. I am sure it is all a learning curve, but if anyone had any helpful tips or tricks we could use, we'd appreciate the advice!
Hi Mondtanzer, welcome to the forum! Congratulations on your new puppy - learning curve is certainly the name for it! We've all been there, and we've all come out the other side - and you will too I'm sure you're already finding your feet, but I can't help posting these links anyway, just in case they can offer you some more support. Congrats on your new puppy, Luna! It sounds like you're doing great so far with her training. For the nipping and jumping, redirect her with toys when she gets too excited and try teaching a “settle” or “calm” command. For toilet training, consistency is key—take her outside immediately after meals, naps, and playtime, and praise her when she eliminates outside. Also, limit her indoor space until she’s more reliable. With time and patience, things will improve!
