We lost our dear old lab BJ the day before Christmas Eve last year and we still miss him everyday. He was a black dog named BJ. He'd been epileptic since the age of 3. had elbow dysplasia and had a bust cruciate fixed about 5 years prior to his death. BJ was the most kind, gentle and affectionate dog you could wish to meet although he had various problems, some of which were caused by his epilepsy meds in the latter few years of his life. Despite all of that, he was 3 months short of his 14th birthday when he died.

We still have our little old cocker spaniel Alfie, now aged 12, an only dog for the first time in his life. We are thinking that some time in the not too distant future we may approach some rescue organisations with a view to meeting an older dog in need of a home. Always assuming they think we are worthy !

We are an elderly couple, in our 60s so a puppy, although a wonderful thought, is not the way for us to go.

I'm looking forward to reading about your lovely labs.

Hi FayRose and welcome to the forum :) It is sad to read about the loss of your lovely BJ - he sounds like a real gem. I am sure you greatly miss him and all his ways.

Giving a home to an older dog in need is an absolutely wonderful thing to do and a great tribute to your BJ also.

So sorry to read about BJ (I had an epileptic dog so can appreciate how it was for you) he sounded a wonderful dog. I had a puppy when I was 69 and another when (leave space blank!!!!!), not too much hard work once they are over 6 months. However, I think it super of you to consider an older Lab from rescue, it is certainly what I would do if I lost one of my Labs.

Hello and welcome to the forum. It's so hard to lose a treasured pet / friend / family member. It sounds like BJ was the most loved boy in the world, though.

I hope you keep us updated with how your search is going for your new dog. There are so many dogs in need of their forever homes; you're doing a great thing. Are you wanting a Lab in particular, or will you wait and see what you find when you start looking?

A warm welcome to the forum. So sorry to hear of your loss. BJ was obviously a much treasured family member.

I rehomed an older black lab last year Casper, who is just wonderful. He has a bit of baggage, but that just gives him more personalty in my mind.:):)

Quite a few members here have also adopted labradors/labrador crosses, and I am sure they will be happy to share their experiences.

This is one of the labrador website articles you might find useful:

Hello and welcome from me and my dogs . Losing a dog is just awful , they are never replaced but to offer a home to another is a great thing to do , I`ve done it myself, so I wish you lots of luck

Hello and welcome to our friendly forum, from Poppy and me!

So sorry about losing BJ, those of us who have lost much loved old dogs will understand how difficult it is. I think it is wonderful that you are considering taking on another dog, and quite understand your leaning towards a rescue dog.

It might be easier for Alfie if you rescue an older, calmer dog than a puppy. I brought a new puppy into the house when my old boy, Bones, was already 13. It was very trying for him while she was little, and although he put up with it, the first few months were not easy for him.

Do keep us informed what you decide to do!

Thanks everyone for your lovely welcome and kind words about our dear old BJ. I'll enjoy wandering about the forum finding out about your labs. We're in Devon by the way and fortunate to be in an area surrounded by woodland and farming.
