I just wanted to say hello to all you wonderful lab lovers! I have been so grateful for all your wonderful advice and have really found your book and videos( Pippa) helpful in training my new puppy, Kona! I have had two labs, Bailey, 2000-2013 and Winnie 13 and a half going strong, a puggle 6 ( my granddog that we are caring for while her family is in China) and new puppy Kona, 4 months old! Any good ideas to teach a pup to lie down whle you are eating? I have been using clicker for sit, and a leash to keep him from jumping onus while we eat. I use a crate but would love to have him learn to lie under table as my othe rlabs have done! Can't remember how they began to do that!

Hi and welcome to the forum! :)

A whole meal is a long time to ask a puppy to lie down and be still so don't expect too much just yet :) To teach my dog to lie down during a meal we sat down at the table then waited till he lay down. As soon as he lay oen he got a treat. While he was staying lying down he got given treats now and then. If he got up he got ignored. Over time he lay down for more and more of the meal. Also over time you can gradually stretch the average time between treats (don't always make the time longer and longer - throw some short ones in there to keep the interest and motivation up). I didn't give him any cues - I wanted him to learn that anytime we were at the table his job was to lie down, without being told.

    Welcome to the forum :)

I taught Harley to lie in her bed whilst we ate and initially rewarded her doing this ;)

Hello from me and Molly. It's funny how you forget what your older / previous dogs were like in puppy-hood isn't it, and how you managed to train them? I can't remember a time when my old Rolo didn't come when he was called!

    Hi Kathy,
I have dexter a 20 month old yellow boy.....we were lucky, dexter just used to go and lie on his bed at meal times and gradually he started to come to the table ....and lie on my feet .....he will stay there now for the whole meal although it disturbs him when I'm up and down to get things......I have to remember to say stay or ge gets up and follows me ::)
