Hi everyone. Found your forum online while looking for info on elbow dysplasia. I don't own Labs but like them very much. I am the owner of two Newfoundlands. My oldest is 3 and my pup just turned 10 months. My puppy has walked stiff legged since he was 4 months old. So embarrassed to admit I thought he just walked cute until he started to limp. I took him to my vet that day and had x rays done on his elbows, hips and shoulders within a week. I am now waiting to find out what needs done. I have read a ton of stuff about the surgery and the recovery. My biggest fear is the recovery. Any suggestions will be appreciated.
Welcome to the forum Rose. All dogs are welcome here but I think you have our first Newfies! Fingers crossed for the x-ray esults. There are loads of tips here on how to manage a dog post surgery and hopefully someone can do a link....im a klutz on my phone Jac
Hi and welcome from the Beanwood pack, Bramble, Benson and Casper Couple of threads to get you started. Best of luck though with the outcome and treatment plan when you next visit your vet. https://thelabradorforum.com/threads/things-to-do-for-dogs-on-restricted-exercise.10654/ @Pilatelover kindly kept a journal detailing her journey with Mabel after her diagnosis with ED. https://thelabradorforum.com/threads/elbow-dysplasia-and-mabel.11237/ Oh, and photos please! We all LOVE Newfies here!
Welcome from me, my three Labramonsters, Willow, Shadow and Luna (Squidge) and my foster Podenco-cross, Conchita. Sorry to her of your boy's diagnosis. It's not all doom and gloom, though, we've got lots of success stories on here from both hip and elbow dysplasia and cruciate ops. I love a Newfie. We definitely need pictures, please!
Welcome, look forward to hearing more about Newfoundland and your dogs. There are many success stories re elbow dysplasia. My 16 week old puppy broke his elbow and had to have it pinned and screwed and the after care was taxing, a month of cage rest only, then in a small room for a month etc etc. However, it is all forgotten in the mists of time and I am sure you will be fine.
Hello & a big welcome to you & your big pups from me & Coco - German Shepherd x Lab - I echo what's already been said - pleas, PLEASE can we have some photos.
Welcome from Hattie 10 years and our rescue boy Charlie 6 years. So sorry to hear about your pup. Absolutely adore Newfies! Any photo's? Good luck with the x-rays and so hoping there is nothing too serious going on xx
Hello, and welcome from Ariel (1 year) and I! Newfies are beautiful dogs. Hopefully nothing serious will show up in the X-rays. You’ll find the folks here love photos (me included of course!), so you might as well post some now..❤️. Oh, and we need their names too.
Hi there and welcome here! I have a Lab/Newfie X but he’s certainly more Lab than Newfie Looking forward to pictures of your two. Hope everything goes well for your pup. One step at a time, try not to panic too much.
Got the call from vet..surgery needed on both elbows but no guarantee that my puppy will be okay because elbows are super bad. Will be having the surgery since there is a chance for him. Better to try and hope he is pain free than to do nothing at all. The left will be done first then later the right. I had two different experts examine the x rays..both said the same thing. Still have no clue as to why his elbows are this bad. My breeder claims I fed him the wrong food and let him play too much. No support from her. This forum is my best bet for advice as he recovers. Thank you.
Oh that's hard...poor lad . I am sure with lots of TLC he will have quality fun ahead. He just needs a chance. I have had 3 gorgeous Newfies..their size whilst growing causes challenges. My last boy was a 70kg soft bundle of wonderfulness...he died 6 years ago and I still miss him. I soooo miss the breed, my other 2 were girls full of love and mischief. I had 3 all at one time ...must have been bonkers. We have downsized to an Alaskan Malamute and a lab, but my heart will always be with Newfies. I wish him all the best for his surgery. We will keep all our fingers and paws crossed for him. keep us posted. Emma, Meg and Jasper
Hi Rose, and welcome to the forum. Very sorry to hear about your puppy. Good luck with his treatment.
Hi @Rose Carter . So sorry to hear the diagnosis on your poor boy. Having ED usn't the end if the world although it may feel like it right now, particularly with yhe awful response from the breeder. My girl was operated on at 8 months old, just on one elbow, but she has an underlying malformation in the elbow which can't be corrected so we manage the situation which niw affects the other elbow and get on and enjoy life. Some useful resources , sorry I haven't got the links as on the phone... No Walks, No Worries by Sian Ryan full of useful information to prepare and for recovery. There is also a video on You Tube by Donna Hill with 20 activities for dogs on crate rest. All sorts of food toys ae usually very good to use the brain, but when choosing activities to keep your boy occupied consider whether he likes to explore with his nose, or use his paw as you won't want him pawing at things to begin with.
Thanks to all who have replied to my post. Our Wyatt is an amazing puppy. So loving in spite of the pain he must be having. My husband I are are ready for the challenge this surgery will bring. Vet told us the first few weeks will be the toughest and so we have decided to take turns making sure he will be watched closely so he stays calm. Since he has been this way the entire time we have had him he spends most of his time laying down while he bites at his toys. I will look up the videos before the surgery and check out the links
