I’m Peggy. My husband and I have Butterscotch, 16 years old in March. We moved from the only home Butterscotch has had, last April. Before we moved, she was definitely showing signs of her age. Her back legs were very weak. She had started pooping in the house and she just seemed miserable. I thought that we should have put her down before the move, but my husband just couldn’t. Since the move, she has gotten progressively worse. We have to help her down the steps to the yard. Sometimes she cannot stand all the way up. Lately, she has been waking us at 3am, barking. My husband let’s her out, but she still barks and only stops when he feeds her. We’ve probably started a habit, but we need sleep! Have your old labs done this?
Hi there, and welcome. Sixteen is an amazing age for a lab. Unfortunately barking is quite common in very old dogs and in dogs experiencing cognitive decline. Your vet may be able to suggest some medication to settle her at night. It can be incredibly difficult to know when to let go of your elderly dog so your husband's reaction is very normal.
