Hey everyone, My wife and I are finally getting a dog together and have decided on a Labrador Retriever (English) but we could use some advice on how to help her with her new home. she's already 12 months old and has spent those 12 months with the breeder learning some basic obedience and other things. We have been ready for a puppy but since we're skipping most of the difficult parts we're not sure where we should start off with her. Reason she's 12 months old is that they were expecting a yelllow and black litter but only had black pups. The family that was going to adopt her didn't want black so they backed out. They've now spent the last while waiting for the perfect family to take her and that was my wife and I Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Hi and welcome to the forum! Great to hear that you are bringing a Labrador into your lives. They are usually extremely people oriented dogs and I'm sure your new girl will just love having her own special family at last I'd recommend that you buy the Happy Puppy Handbook. I know your girl is not really a puppy, but you will more or less be starting with the basics with her so there will be a lot in the book that is helpful. Just a few questions so we can give more helpful advice: - how would you rate your current knowledge of dog training? - has she been an inside dog and where will she live with you? - what are your plans for exercise/training/doggie entertainment? - is she used to ever being left alone at all? - has she been exposed to different situations, people and dogs? Sorry for all the questions!! What are you going to call her and when is the big day?
Hi and welcome to the forum I would highly recommend the happy puppy book too. It would be good to go back to basics to teach her how you want to When is she coming home?
Hello and welcome to the forum! Ask away on any questions, we will be more than happy to help! First of all, I would visit her several times before you bring her home with you, so that she knows who you are and has already slightly bonded with you. Just like bringing a puppy home, I would bring a toy or towel from her breeder, so that she has a familiar smell in her new place. Good luck, and looking forward to hearing more.
