I am the new owner (well this includes my wife and two kids ;)) of a 7week old yellow Labrador retriever, named Hawk.

We picked him up on Sunday and I have been hanging with him 24-7 these last few days getting him comfortable with his surroundings; he seams to be settling in....even got a full night sleep out of him a few nights back.

My previous experience with Labradors was with our black Labrador; we had him from May 2003 until October 2014. Wasn't sure I / we were ready for this new adventure in our life and I have been pretty anxious these last few weeks prior to his arrival; not certain how we will juggle everything but we will find a way.

Looking to this website and these forums for some good information and intel to help me through these early years with potty training, obedience, etc.

Started a 'New Topic' yesterday under Training Log where I have shared more info so hopefully I can get a few more folks to way in.

Also hope I can figure out how to see the replies; having no luck with my new topic yesterday. I am sure its just an admin thing.

Hi and welcome to the forum :)

Getting a new pup or older dog does tend to heighten the nerves, even if it's not your first. There's always something new and unknown about the experience. But we seem to all bumble along ok :) There's a lot of info on the forum and the main site, but please don't ever hesitate to start a thread if you want an opinion on anything or just want to share an experience or some pics :)

Hope the issue with viewing the other thread has been sorted - sometimes a moderator needs to approve new members' posts before they can be seen (the system seems to pick random victims for this!).

Welcome to the board from Ontariariario, Canada. My boy was a winter pup too. One tip for you, don't get locked out at the midnight pee when it's -30 outside. :)

Good tip! I am thankful its been mild so far here in Saskatchewan!

I was also told by a couple of breeders that its easier to house train in the winter...they don't like hanging around outside when its -30C with a windchill ;)!

That's what I was thinking...its an authorization issue. I also am unable to post pictures so I assume that will change soon as well.

Hi and welcome to the forum! This forum doesn't allow you to post photos directly; you have to use a photo hosting service like Photobucket, Flickr or, my favourite, Imgur. Then, you just copy the BBCode (that looks like [ IMG]....[/IMG]) into your post here. There are more details if you look in the technical section.

What is your issue with the other thread? Can you not see the replies on http://thelabradorforum.com/forum/let-s-get-training/your-training-logs/270515-hawk-s-training-log ? Rather than cluttering up this thread, if you're still having issues, drop me a PM and I'll try to help.

Hi and welcome I felt very conflicted when i got my last lab and i nearly didn't go through with it,because of some very bad things which happened just before I collected him. Best thing I did though he's turning into a brilliant dog.
So don't worry it might not be an easy ride but it will definately be a fun one
love and hugs from me Douglas Midge and Rory:D

Absolutely, I agree. BUT, why did the puppy who needed to go out twice a night have to be the winter puppy? LOL

Thanks sdegg. I am positive it will be years of joy (cross my fingers) with short order struggles that we all go through as dog owners.

Yeah, not looking forward to him wanting to prance around in the snow at 2:00am when he should be getting back to bed! ... its not play time, its bed time!

I can say though that I have been conditioned to the evening and early hour wake ups; our 5yr old was a terrible sleeper (eustachian tube issues) and had us up every two hours through the night for the first two years...Ill take this start with Hawk over that one.

Hello from Cambridgeshire! Buffy says woof :) I take it from your name that you're a hockey fan. My husband's from Winnipeg so we're a hockey household. I don't envy you doing housetraining in a prairie winter!! Enjoy Hawk, it's hard work having a puppy but lots of fun as well.

Yup....the family loves Hockey. Hawk (or as we have sometimes nick-named him Hawk-e ;)) has even enjoyed a good chew on the hockey sticks in the garage as well.

Good old Jets. My uncle played for them years ago.

Winter training, not a ton of fun. Hawk has yet to embrace the cold weather and the fun there can be had outside! I don't blame him at 5am however.
