Hi everyone from Spain. This cute guy from the profile photo is Draco. He is around 2 years old. We rescued him from a dog pound a year and a half ago. He is mixed breed (lab and nobody knows what else), like his brother, Neo, border collie and belgian shepherd (is what they told us, but we're in doubt). Draco is a good dog. But he's got (we've got) a big problem: whenever he sees another dog, he is suddendly deaf, doesn't hear us calling him... And doesn't come back either... We've met another lab with the same problem. Are they all the same? This is sooo tiring....
Hi from me and Sam ! I think if you hang about here a bit you'll get lots of good advice from people who have exactly the same problem Gorgeous doggie xx
Hi and welcome from me and 2.5 year old girl, Harley. It might be worth you buying Total Recall by Pippa Mattinson as it will help you train stage by stage recall with distractions like other dogs. When I foster rescues I use a long line (20ft) so I can stop them if they are just about to bolt.
Hello from me and Lilly! I would second Ternaya in recommending Total recall - absolutely - a very worthwhile management plan there! If I followed it through comprehensively I am sure it would solve deer-chasing too *sigh* LOVE the name Draco, although my daughter was disappointed he wasn't a silver colour he he! jac
Hi there and welcome to the forum. You might find the articles below of some help with Draco's recall. It sounds as though you just need to do some work on proofing the command around other dogs, a common issue with lovely friendly dogs like Labradors: Train A Labrador To Come When Called Proofing Your Labrador's Recall
Thank you all! I'll read the articles and try to find the book. Well, he's got another "little" problem: he has escaped from home several times. Now we have a fence almost like a prison (he always managed to find a hole or made one to go out), but we're still afraid he escapes when we're busy doing something. Fines here are really high, if police finds him before we do...
Hi and welcome from Hattie 8 years and our rescue boy Charlie 5 years. Love the name Draco I absolutely agree about reading Total Recall, our rescue boy had no recall whatsoever when he came to us but we worked through the book and now he is pretty good. If Draco is escaping from your garden you will have to stay with him when he needs to go outside to stop this and make sure you secure the fence properly. Draco could be killed on the road or cause an accident. I hope you can sort this out quickly. x
Yes, we know it can be dangerous. In fact, he is insured, just in case... He escapes when he stays alone with his grandma (and we're at work). She can't control him all the time. But we hope this new fence (a fence for ostrichs) he won't be able to break or bend it (I'm crossing my fingers... )
Oh Draco sounds a bit of a character! Stay safe Draco and be a good boy for your Grandma! Great to see you on The Forum X
Welcome to you & Draco. Sounds like you have your hands full. I'm also a fan of Total Recall (though we're stuck at the moment, not having other dogs to work with, so have the same trouble as you - Coco will bolt to other dogs, still avoiding those situations at the moment )
