    Hi Teena,
I can see your photos (I've managed to make some of the ones on the previous page show up too). He is a sweet little dog.

I think that Cooper looks a little bit 'out of condition', and possibly underweight. That means perhaps his diet needs adjusting a little bit. Can you tell us what you are feeding him, and when he was last wormed?

    Pippa

He looks like a cutie, that's for sure. Not sure about estimating his age - my dog was 8 months old when I got him so that's all I have to go on! I'm sure others can help. But is there some reason you don't believe the breeder you got him from as to his age?

Well really I wouldn't worry about it! I don't know about coat colours as a result of mixing black/yellow labs but maybe that spot of brown us normal in that case.

    Hi Teena Ann,
Don't let anyone spoil your enjoyment of little Cooper.Im having a lot of experience of people passing comments on our dog.he is a perfect ( ;)im not biased at all!)full bred working line labrador and I cannot tell you how many people ( usually the ones walking pugs and highland terriers!)ask 'oh what is he a cross with?'i can understand you being concerned if you have been misled at all when purchasing him but at the end of the day it really doesn't matter because you will love him just the same and you sound like you are being very committed to his care.I saw Pippa had asked you about his diet, she will give you excellent advice.i feed Dexter on a complete kibble.....that choice comes probably comes down to a lack of confidence/knowledge on my behalf.....I felt this was the best option for us to make sure that he was getting everything he needed.im not sure what availability would be like where you live. You must tell us a bit about yours s and Coopers life in Chennai.....this is turning into a very international forum ;D
Have a great day with your puppy,he's lovely

    Re: Hello

    Hi Teena,

Is the Pedigree food you are giving him a dry kibble like this one?

Quite a lot of people coming to the Labrador site for India feed their puppies on a very different diet from what we feed here in the UK. So I do appreciate that you have to use what is locally available.

But, if you can manage it, your puppy would be better off having a complete kibble like the one in the link for every meal, than eating rice, vegetables and milk.

His weight is not so important as the way he looks and feels. He should be well covered without being fat, and whilst it is ok to be able to feel ribs if you press firmly, you shouldn't be able to see them or even feel them just by running your hands lightly along his sides.

If you run your hands down his back, you should not be able to feel the knobbles on his backbone.

Puppies are wormed differently in different parts of the world. Here in the UK we use edible wormers, paste or tablets. But you will need to be guided by your vet, as there will be different sorts of parasites in your region.

If your puppy is lively and happy and eating well, and doesn't have an upset stomach, he is probably not sick, so try not to worry. Improving his diet a bit will simply help him to fill out and grow well, and give him a nice thick glossy coat.

    Pippa

    Re: Hello

If you mix water in with his food then he probably doesn't need to drink much. I don't think he is avoiding water, just playing with it! Labradors love to play with water. In the photos he looks very sweet, but I would take him to the vet as he may need worming tablets. I don't think he has rabies, if that is what you are worried about, but when he is three months old your vet will vaccinate him against rabies.

Does he play with you? If he seems happy and playful when he is awake, that is a good sign. If he seems quiet and sad, or if his poos are runny or he seems to have a temperature, then you need to take him to the vet.

Some black Labradors have brown markings on their coats, don't worry about that. The pedigree food for puppies sounds good, but I would stop giving him vegetables and milk for now, if you can and just give him the pedigree puppy food.

You should start doing little bits of training with him now, encouraging him to follow you around the house and garden, and making it fun so that he always wants to be near you and comes when you call his name. You can teach him to sit and wait nicely until you give him a treat or his food. And toilet training, of course. That's probably enough for the first week. Karen

    Re: Hello

    He is very cute :)

I have a friend with a black Labrador and he is from purebred parents (they are both registered as pure bred Labradors). He has brindle (brown) markings on his legs. As Karen says, sometimes Labradors can be born with brown markings, but that does not make them a cross bred dog. Have a look at the site in this link - it shows pictures of purebred Labradors with a whole lots of different markings :) They are labelled as 'mismarked' because they are not the traditional colours, but they are still 100% Labrador. http://www.woodhavenlabs.com/mismarks.html

As Dexter says, just don't worry about what other people say. I have had the same experience as her with people asking what my dogs have been crossed with. Both my Labradors have been pure bred dogs from very good show lines but because I never let them get fat many people assumed that they were/are cross bred.

When I look at the photos of your gorgeous puppy, I think 'Labrador' :)

And please don't worry about your English - it is very good and no-one would have any trouble at all understanding your posts. :)

    Re: Hello

It's normal for a pup or dog to seek out a cool place if it is hot :) It's also normal for him to follow people in his family, especially the people he is most attached to.

When you call him, what do you do when he gets closer to you? Do you give him a treat when he gets close to you, to reward him for coming? It is a good idea to do that :) I always give my dog a treat when he comes after I call him, because I want him to be really keen to come to me. It seems to work well :)

When he backs away from people, it may be because he is a little wary of them. Does he do this only with people he doesn't know, or also with people that he already knows?

Generally, a pup or dog that is feeling unhappy will not seem to have any energy and will want to keep away from people. They may lose a bit of interest in their food. A pup or dog that is happy or feeling good will have a relaxed, open mouth (looks like they are smiling) and be wagging their tail when their people give them attention. Dogs do differ in personality though. Some are quieter and some are more lively.

Some people have suggested that a vet visit would be a good idea, to give your puppy a worming treatment. I also think that that would be a really good idea. Where I live (Australia) people generally worm their dogs using a tablet (every month or every three months depending on the exact brand of tablet). Whatever you use, it's best to use a worming treatment that will cover tapeworm, heartworm, roundworm, whipworm and hookworm.

    Re: Hello

    Hi Teena

You have lots of good advice here.

Two important things to focus on

    1. Feeding: please give your puppy Pedigree puppy food, four times a day, and stop giving him any other food.

The pedigree puppy food has a balanced combination of nutrients. If you mix it with vegetables he may not get enough nutrients and might get sick. You need to make sure he has clean water available all the time. If he plays in it and spills it, it doesn't mean he isn't thirsty, you need to keep replacing it. This is especially important in a hot climate, and when feeding dry kibble.

    2. Worming: I think your puppy might need worming. Please take him to the vet and get some worm tablets.

His belly looks a little large in the photo where he is lying down. This can be a result of a worm infestation. Once he is free of worms, he will grow better and his coat will look better. The vet will also be able to make sure that Cooper is healthy and growing well.

Get these two priorities sorted, and then we can talk to you about socialisation and training. You need to get the pup healthy first and foremost.

    Pippa
