    Hi Teena,
I have deleted your comment on the website, because I find it too complicated to carry on the same conversation in two different places. :D

You can start teaching Cooper to recall right now. The sooner the better, and as we discussed earlier, obedience training can begin now as long as you are using positive only methods. Punishment is not appropriate for puppies.

So first you need to know a little bit about how puppies learn to do new things. You also need to know how to choose and deliver rewards to your puppy.

To find out all about training with rewards, have a look at this site and let me know if there is anything you don't understand.

    Hey Pippa,
I Don have a clicker but it is said in d article tat u can associate a sound or signal but my question is can we use a signal nd sound at same time nd do the same for recall training mostly u must begin slowly na nd so I thought y Don I start wid recall nd then wid obedience will this affect his behaviour

    Hi Teena,

You don't need a clicker. A clicker is simply an event marker.

An event marker is a signal you make to let the dog know he has done something right. It is not used to get the dog to do something.

Because recall ends up with the dog right next to you, and event marker is not really necessary. You can simply put the food straight in his mouth when he arrives.

I wouldn't worry about event markers and clickers right now. Just get the recall going.

What you will need to do, is chose a recall command or signal. A word you are going to use, when you want the puppy to come running.

This is a very special word, and for the next few weeks, no-one must use this word unless the puppy is already running towards them.

Does that make sense to you?

This is the most important part. If you or anyone else, uses the recall word, and your puppy disobeys, you will have spoilt the power of the word. You have to build a strong bond between the word, and running towards you.

You need to teach your puppy to chase after you and reward him when he reaches you. When he is doing this often, you need to start using your special recall word. But ONLY use the word when he is already running towards you.

Tell us what word you have chosen. In england we usually use 'come' or 'here' .

If you can get hold of a dog whistle that would be brilliant, but if you can't, don't worry.

    Pippa

    Re: Hello

Don't worry about that for now Teena, just praise him and pet him when he comes to you. Don't tell him off for brushing past you - you want him to think you are the best thing in his world, so he will always come when you call!

    Re: Hello

Teena, you need to stand up, say 'no' and turn away from him when he bites. You can then give him one of his toys to play with. Do not feed him when he barks - if you ignore his barking, and praise him and stroke and play with him when he is being good, then he will learn that barking does not get him anywhere, but that good, quiet behaviour means that he gets praised and gets attention. Just stay calm - you have to get through this for a few weeks but IT WILL GET BETTER. He is a baby - and like human children it takes time to learn the rules.

Don't worry that he runs to other people when they call, that is not bad for his recall. You just keep on showing him that you are the best thing in his life, then he will come to you.

It can feel like things are getting out of control with a puppy - but stay calm, things will improve.

Well, if you play with his toys, then he will start to join in too... How nice that he likes his belly rubbed, and that he keeps quiet while you do that, that's a lovely bit of bonding you have got going! Of course he likes you - you say he comes when you calls, he follows you around the house, and he likes you rubbing his tummy! :)

    Re: Hello

    Teena,

The whole process of teaching a puppy what you expect of him is a long process, requiring patience. The key is consistency. Just because you have done something a few times and you don't see any result doesn't mean that you need to fret about it. And as has been mentioned before, what you are seeing in your pup is normal puppy behaviour. Puppies jump up, nip, and bark. You could do all the training in the world and you are still going to see some of this behaviour until he grows out of it. The idea is that as he grows more mature you are helping him, by training, to understand what is expected of him. I am seeing some of this with my dog, Simba. When I got him he was 9 months old. He was doing many of these behaviours, as his previous owners did not know how to train him. I have started training him, using a clicker, and showing him what is expected. He is learning, and I see it getting better, but he is STILL jumping up, nipping, and barking when he gets excited. That doesn't mean he will always do those things (well, likely he will always bark when excited, he is a dog, after all). But I do know that the combination of him getting older and me training him will EVENTUALLY result in a well -mannered dog. I do find the training articles on this site and the Kikopup videos on YouTube to be very useful.
Your pup will be teething soon - sorry, I forget what age, but at some point he will lose his "baby" teeth and his adult teeth will grow. Just like human babies and children do. He will want lots of things to chew on to relieve the uncomfortable feeling of teething. So be prepared! There is usually lots of "teething" chew toys in pet stores!
