My Lab broke into a tied up bin bag at lunchtime and ate four, cooked chicken thigh bones. I have phoned vet and she says it is a case of 'wait and see'. I wonder if anyone else has had a dog eat cooked chicken bones, what did you do and was the dog alright? Any useful advice?

Oh dear, you must be worried, but if it is any consolation, I have a friend who insists that cooked bones are harmless and has been giving them to her dogs for years - including chicken bones. Despite my warnings and protestations. So whilst it is not something I would recommend, I suspect your dogs will be just fine. Fingers crossed for you

It happens. Lady stole a cooked chicken once and ate the whole thing bones and all with no problems. I think it's definitely not to be recommended, but as the vet says just wait and see.

Thank you for those reassuring replies, helps me to feel less anxious, much appreciated as I am feeling worried.

Try not to worry too much, hard I know. :)
My Pointer ate a cooked chicken carcass he found on the playing field, there were no ill effects at all stomach wise, he just errupted with bright red skin due to his chicken allergy. ::)

Maggie68, both of us will be worried tonight then! Vet said to watch for about 72 hours and to give him some bread which I have. I would like to give him more but scared he might then bloat!

Thanks mandyb another success story which helps.

Pongo has snaffled chicken bones before now and no ill affects. I wouldn't choose to feed them to him, but I don't think you should worry too much. Just keep an eye on him. My guess is that the only ill affect will be a future obsession with bin bags.... ::)

Oh no! I missed this earlier. I do hope everything is ok...I bet it will be, we've had dogs on the forum eat much worse and been fine. Best wishes...

Hope everything is OK for you Stacia and Maggie. My grandparents had a dog that used to regularly get a cooked chicken carcass to eat and it lived to a ripe old age (I'm not saying that I would recommend that but just trying to give a little context)

Pleased you are having an uneventful time.

They will pinch and eat everything. You have to be so vigilant, more so than with a child as they can move a whole lot faster.

Yesterday while I was loading the washing machine Molly (when my back was turned sorting out another item) pinched the sachet of washing liquid and ran into the lounge with her booty. At which point she pierced it with her tooth, discovered that she didn't like it and it was abandoned leaking blue liquid on my burnt orange carpet.

I gave her a succession of Kongs and lots of water and all seems well.

My husbands comment was "at last we've found something the dog doesn't want to eat"

Hope all passes through without complication and it is all a distant memory by the time you have to defend the Christmas Turkey from a canine onslaught.

Re: Help, my Lab has eaten cooked chicken bones

I have two Labs and neither (up until this moment ;D) have been typical Labs in the food department! Number two, who will be three in January, has taken to gently opening the waste bin and picking out one thing delicately then stupidly showing me what he had taken! We had chicken yesterday and I said to OH, make sure Rourke doesn't get the chicken bones, so OH took out the bin bag, did it up tightly, but left it in the kitchen!! Rourke, broke into the bottom of the bag and ignored everything until he got to the bones! We undid the bag and went through all the rubbish, everything there except the bones :(

    Is this a Lambie attack???

Charlie snaffled what looked like a bit of cooked chicken carcass in the street today (it's bin day ::) ). I wasn't quick enough, and he was on a "go sniff" at the end of his 6ft lead...

I gave him bread, but made him work for it. Hope he's ok...
