She's very cute I agree that a crate is the safest way to go for car travel, but it needs to be a crate fitted and secured to your car, not a 'house crate' that you sit in the car. There are a lot of harnesses on the market that manufacturers claim are suitable for car travel. Most are not and will easily break (usually at the buckle) in a crash or they will come off over the dog's head. So with harnesses you need to do your research and look for an independently crash tested harness. Any that are safe are really chunky and not always easy to get in an out of (to reduce weak points) and probably won't come in puppy sizes. We use a Kleinmetal Allsafe harness. For it to work properly the harness needs to have the seatbelt threaded through the back (plus you can tether the harness to the child seat anchor point to stop the dog wandering round the back seat). As far as your list goes I'd add doggy toothpaste For a brush you can buy a child's toothbrush or an ultrasoft, small head adult toothbrush, or a dog toothbrush with bristles. You can get little scrubby brushes that fit over your finger and these are good for gradually getting your pup used to having something in their mouth and moving against their teeth. You do want to move on to a bristle tooth brush though as you need the bristles to get under the gum line, which the 'on the end of your finger' ones don't do. Hope the next four weeks go fast!
Oh my word. She really is so beautiful! Gorgeous colour!! I love seeing the pics of her growing because I'm also imagining what my pup must be growing like!! Bless her being nippy!! How lovely for you!! Not long until collection now!!
Congratulations on your puppy! It seems so long ago that my 5 1/2 month old Cornelia was that size! Enjoy every precious moment. They grow so fast! Good job on getting prepared before she arrives! We brought Cornelia home in a cat carrier LOL She had a long 3 hour drive from the mountains to our house.
Thanks again everyone! I've added doggy toothpaste and a finger brush to the list. I've also been looking at car crates and crash harnesses. Can anyone recommend some nail clippers? I used to cut my old cat's claws (he was a polydactyl and some had no sheath), is cutting a dog's nails fairly similar? I got pretty good at doing it, never caused my cat to bleed or have any rough edges. But he was a very laidback cat and would sit still while I did it. I ordered her a couple of puppy Kongs today, one medium and one large. Just over 2 weeks now, it's going so quickly! We're going for another visit on Saturday which we're all looking forward to very much.
I would recommend some vet bed. To line a crate with or use as a mat/rug. Washes and wears well and tumble dries. Worth investing in a couple of pieces at least. I'm sure someone will do a link if you don't know what I am talking about but can't do it easily on my mobile. Buffy looks gorgeous!
This is where I bought my last vet bed from: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NON-SLIP-...t=LH_DefaultDomain_3&var=&hash=item3cdbe9eccd
Hey guys, sorry to jump on someone elses thread, but I saw there was a previous mention of a puppy pen, where can I source one of these? Many Thanks, Daniella
There's various vetbed out there. I just saw some yesterday 46"x30" - the size of a large crate - for about 15 pounds on Amazon. You can still line the base of a large crate with it and put in a divider; that's what I did. Get the vetbed with non-slip backing and watch if you cut it, you should seal it if you cut it to stop puppy ingesting long loose threads (it has happened). Don't mean to sound bossy!!
Oh, just reading the thread backwards. Don't get nail clippers yet. Doing dogs is very different from doing cats; perhaps ask the vets' advice on your first visit?
This is where we got our vet bed - it's excellent, thick and very easily washed and dried - http://tinyurl.com/ngkcrjc This is where we got our puppy pen - http://tinyurl.com/qh4n58e
Oh wow thanks guys, I will be stocking up on a vetbed and play pen tonight!! Not sure how I am going to be able to wait another 4 weeks for our little guy to come home! I guess I will just have to keep buying stuff for him to keep my mind busy! (I can hear my husband hiding the creditcard from here)
Oh wow thanks guys, I will be stocking up on a vet bed and play pen tonight! I don't know how I am going to be able to wait 4 weeks to get this little guy home, I guess I will have to occupy myself with buying lots for him in the mean time (I can hear my husband hiding the credit cards as we speak)
Thank you for the vet bed recommendations, I know the breeder said that he would send us home with a little square but it seems worth getting our own as well. We had our last visit today, the pups are full of energy and great fun. This time next week she'll be home with us!
