Hi, I've just joined. I have a gorgeous golden lab, Bella, who is 14 months old..look forward to meeting other lab owners
Hello and welcome to the forum from me and my two, who are 19 months old. Willow is a black girl and Shadow is a yellow boy. They are an absolute joy - most of the time! Have you had Bella from a young pup?
Hi and welcome from me and my two, Lucan a 6yr old black lab and Bracken a 9yr old 'english' Pointer.
Hi all..yes we've had Bella from 6 weeks old, although I've read on here since that is too young to be taken away from their mum but I didn't know that at the time. I was told she was ready to go as she had already been weaned off mum. It has been harder work than I thought with all the chewing, she's destroyed alot lol but seems to be getting better with that now and I wouldn't swap her for the world!
Ah, yes, even though puppies are often weaned from their mum at 6 weeks, those extra two weeks are invaluable for them to learn all sorts of things from their litter mates and mum, who will still be around even if not actively feeding. You'll know for next time. More pictures would be lovely
Do you think that's why she bites quite a bit? She doesn't do it viciously but has always but..it hurt alot more when she was little and had her baby teeth that were razor sharp but doesn't hurt so much now but I read that that's one of the things their mum will teach them, she'll give them a nip back..I'll try add some more pics..still trying to work this site out lol
Being taken away from mum and litter mates early will impact upon their biting and bite inhibition as it hasn't had do long to develop. Puppies taken sway too early can also be poorer at reading dog body language, again they lead alot from mum and litter mates
It's just the problem with her biting..she's great with other dogs at the park and knows when other dogs aren't interested in playing with her (if that's what you mean about dogs body language) she is happy, boisterous and so loving, still wants to sit on my lap like when she was little, although crushes me now lol
It's good that she knows when other dogs don't want to play the biting will improve you just have to be consistent with swapping fingers etc for toys to discourage.
I feel quite sorry for her when another dog doesn't want to play because she loves Chase games and you can see the disappointment in her face, bless her
Hello from 2 rescues, Belle the mongrel, collie x and Cooc the Lab x GSD....we've not had young puppies here.
Hi, welcome from me and 10 month old Ripple. Ripple is a shocker for still biting - mostly when over excited but sometimes, it also seems, when he doesn't get his own way. I got him at 7 weeks - not my choice I was backed into a corner by the breeder - and I've always felt he didn't get enough bite inhibition training from his mum and litter mates.
It wasn't really my choice to get Bella at that time but the breeder said she was ready to go and I thought that they knew best anyway..I loved how I didn't have to pick a puppy tho coz they were all gorgeous..when I went to look, they were all cosied up together but as soon as I walked in Bella was straight up lol and wouldn't leave me alone so made my choice easy
Welcome Mandy, i know what you felt when Bella chosed you! Back when i saw the litter Sirius was the one who came towards me, those moment are just priceless! P.S i picked up the naughtiest of the litter and he still bites occasionally due to excitment!
