I just brought home my lovely pup cooper! He is a chocolate lab, he is now 3 months old to join our family, I also have a Boston terrier. I have been doing the basics and training is advancing well.... Except crate training. Whenever I try to crate he howls... He is comfortable in it, sleeps in it, is no afraid whatsoever... Until I have to go out! I have done the frozen kong, tired him out, etc... Please tell me what I'm missing here! Thanks
Hi Joan, Welcome to the forum and congratulations on your new puppy. Here's a guide to crate training that will hopefully help you - https://www.thelabradorsite.com/crate-training-your-labrador-puppy/ Let us know how you get along!
I really dislike crates and think dogs do too. I'd never even heard of a dog crate til about 10 years ago so it's clearly possible to live without them. My dog was crate trained by his previous owners but his behaviour got so much better when we stopped closing the door on his crate, having made the kitchen as safe as possible for him. Could you use a puppy pen or a puppy proof room so it's less traumatic for him when you go out?
