Hi all, We rehomed Ridley a couple of weeks ago. An early session with a trainer his him down as "rangy - no recall whatsoever", but "steady - a very good sit". He's just had his 1st birthday, and we're working on loose lead walking and recall, and generally almost-doing-what-you're-told, with the grand ambition of passing Grade One before I retire... : Sean
Re: Hi from Glasgow Hi Sean and Ridley, welcome to the forum from me Helen, Hattie 6 years and our rescue Lab x Pointer Charlie 3 years. Ridley is gorgeous. We rescued Charlie at 9 months and he was shall we say "rangy with NO recall whatsoever" also and it's been a tough road, but we found this forum bought Pippa's book Total Recall a whistle and got to work almost 2 years ago and we have a not too bad recall now and a well behaved boy most of the time : We are not there yet but Charlie gets a little off lead now and responds to recall and we are working on the stop whistle too. I don't know what your trainer advised about recall but we have had Charlie on a long training line for a long time to practise and were very lucky to have had the use of a friends paddock to practise off lead. We are now at the point of increasing Charlie's off lead in areas we can carefully manage him and he is doing well keeping close to my husband David. We also have worked on lose lead walking which was a difficult process. Do you know Ridley's background? I wish you luck with your lovely boy and please keep sending us lots of updates on your progress. Well done to you for rehoming Ridley it's such a lovely thing to do x
Re: Hi from Glasgow Thank you - we really are very lucky. He was returned to his breeder at 11 months - we've only had him a couple of weeks. Don't know much more than that, but it's safe to say he's had very little training. Biggest issues just now are: reactive to other dogs, no recall, no loose lead. Making progress on the last two, and dealing with the first by avoidance for now. Currently on a long line for recall and sit/stays, and using the Grade 1 book - although I gather the rules are a bit different for spaniels. He really is a lovely dog, we were very lucky to get him. Sean
Re: Hi from Glasgow Yes sounds like a familiar story "little or no training ". With regards to Ridley being reactive to other dogs you could try BAT training, there is a whole training section on the forum started by Jen which is brilliant, we have been using it with Charlie with good success as he can also be reactive to a few dogs and others no problem. Sorry I don't know how to link it. I think it would be worth taking a look

Re: Hi from Glasgow Hi Sean, welcome to you and handsome Ridley! Lilly is a 4 year old labby girl and we hail from NE Fife. If you haven't already seen Pippa's book Total Recall, I can highly recommend it. Will be great to hear how you are getting on with your boy. jac
Re: Hi from Glasgow He's super. My first dog as an adult ( back in 1980) was a rescue Springer, who brought me much happiness. I've got a soft spot for Springers, just not the energy to own one now!
Re: Hi from Glasgow What a handsome boy! Welcome, welcome - I hope you enjoy our happy, friendly forum. Good luck, and I hope you have many, many happy years together.
