Hello! My name is Theresa and I'm new to the forum and new to owning a Labrador! I live in Minnesota and work as a veterinary technician. I have a cat, a 14yr old pug, and our new family member Jasper, a 1 yr old black Labrador Retriever. Jasper came to us from a unique situation. He is a "career change dog" from a local service dog training program. He was unable to continue as a service dog due to elbow dysplasia due to having fragmented coronoid processes. We adopted him in November with the agreement that we would get him bilateral arthroscopic elbow surgery. We're currently 4 weeks post op and just started adding in short walks (thank goodness! We're all going a bit stir crazy). Obviously we have a head start on training and while I'm familiar with dog behavior and training, I'm anxious to not mess up his current status of training and overall well adjusted demeanor!
Welcome Theresa and co from me and Xena in Wellington, NZ. If you want to share photos on the forum you have to use an external photo sharing website like flickr, imgur etc. Upload the photo there, then select the link that gives you the "bb code for forums". Paste the link in your post and voila, we'll see your lovely Jasper!
Those are lovely photos - love that snow nose! And your senior pug lol, that looks like a "WHAT has happened to my life?" face I love pugs, they're such quirky little characters!
Hi and welcome from me and 4 year old girl, Harley. Both of your dogs are adorable. How do they get on?
Welcome to you from Mags, Tatze and Keir from Manchester UK Tatze is my pet dog, a black Lab and she's four years old. Tatze means 'paw' in German. Keir is my fifth Guide Dog puppy, a yellow Golden Retriever/Flatcoat cross and he's eight months old.
Thanks! I will admit my pug is my dog soul mate. You're right they're such clowns and my boy is very eager to please. In his old age and deafness we communicate via hand signals, touch signals, and certain treats (like one means go to your kennel when he sniffs it). He's had a significant cognitive and physical decline and it breaks my heart to see. He's still happy though and has a good quality of life!
Hi Naya! They get along pretty well. Luckily Jasper came to us with a solid "leave it" so within a day he learned to not ask Reggie to play (he asks with a nudge and it can knock Reggie over). Reggie loves all the additional big fluffy dog beds and puts up with Jasper quite well! Sometimes I can't tell if he's sassing Jasper or trying to play and either can Jasper. Reggie's comfort and safety was my main concern when we adopted Jasper and I've been happy with the results so far! Thanks for asking! Edited to add - I also make sure Jasper has appropriate big dog play outlets at the dog park or with friends dogs! (When he's not in recovery from surgery)
Hi and welcome to the forum from Poppy, Merlin and me. Jasper looks like a lovely chap, and he obviously has a good bond with Reggie! He's lucky to have you.
