Hi, I've recently added a retired 4yr old yellow show girl to my family. She is a real sweetie. I've never had a lab before. My previous dogs have been Great Danes, Rottweiler x Dobermann, and a mini schnauzer.
Abby is a real sweetie. Kind, sweet, loving, easy to walk, travels well in the car. So far no complaints. Though I should say the shedding was something new to me. All my previous dogs didn't have an undercoat. Regular brushing has certainly helped.
She was 34kgs when I got her and she is on the small size and obviously overweight. I have put her on a low fat diet and gentle exercise and she is now down to 32.2 kgs. Another few kgs and she will be a perfect weight. The vet is happy with her weight loss too.
Any tips from the show people on how to get her to sit - I've tried everything. I know sitting is not allowed in the show ring and she has been taught not to sit.

Welcome and Congratulations. What is your dog's name? She sounds like a sweet pup. As far as teaching her "Sit" you should start from scratch. Hold a tasty treat at her nose level and slowly move the treat
straight back and slightly scoop your hand upward. Don't say the command just the hand motion. As soon as she sits give the treat. Do this till she sits at least five times in row with just the hand motion. Then you can add the voice command.

Welcome to the forum, we're glad you found us!

Labrador shedding has to be seen to be believed! Abby sounds more than worth it though :)

Hi Jade, thanks for your reply. I teach dog obedience at my local dog club - I have tried all these ways - nothing. I've never had a dog (either my own) or in my classes that I couldn't get to sit. I've started to use a clicker when I see her sit at home - hopefully that will get results, but I have to have my clicker on me at all times lol.

She is - super sweet and relaxed about most things. A dream to take on walks - she just never pulls but walks beside you on a loose leash - heaven!

Thanks for this. I teach dog obedience at my local dog club and this is the first time I have never been able to get a dog to sit. I've done everything I can think of. As a ex show dog she was taught not to sit - sitting would mean disqualification from the show ring. However she is a dream to walk - she never pulls which in my books is the best thing ever. She is not an excitable lab or very food motivated (odd for a lab). I'll just keep trying. Eventually results will come.
