Hi. We have a wonderful 13wk pup who is a confident and feisty little chap... probably be posting more on his feistyness later. I've just been made aware of the inbreeding score on kennel club and I'm saddened to find out our pup is 24.1% inbred....the same as mating a father and daughter....why would a registered breeder allow this? Thanks.... worried lab mum
Wow that is dreadful. Have you been back to the breeder and queried it? Sadly by now you will have bonded with your pup and I’m sure wouldn’t want any other. The accepted percentage for labs is around 6.5%. When we picked Toby from the Champdogs website it listed all his elbow/hip scores etc but I knew nothing about COI. I think there should be a requirement for them to list this too. Unfortunately the onus is on us to look it up on the kennel club website if indeed you have heard of such a thing. Sadly for us Toby has cancer(found at 18 months and believed to be genetic) His score is 8.8( shared great grandfather) Hopefully your pup will live a fit and healthy life and it won’t be an issue but that breeder should be held to account.
That's so sad about Toby. Hope he will be ok. Yes, if only this information was on champdogs. I was just pleased with the hip scores etc. I'm burying my head in the sand and hoping everything is ok. I've not said anything to the breeder but I should highlight it
Thank you. He appears well at the moment but is missing his latest check up as vets only taking emergencies. I think you should ask why they didn’t take it into consideration. When Toby was first diagnosed I contacted the breeder and she seemed concerned but didn’t ever come back and ask how he was. About 6 months later I queried the COI and she was very defensive and cut communication. There doesn’t seem to be any reporting system in the kennel club for poor breeding practises. I may be wrong. I would try to forget about it as much as possible but make sure you have a good insurance policy in place!
Paws crossed for Toby. I'm rubbish with conflict and weirdly don't want the lines of communication to be cut with the breeder. I will mention it to the vet at his next vaccinations ( vets have started vaccinating so hopefully Toby will get his check up soon). Like you say, I 'll try and forget about it and get back to enjoying him. Good point about insurance thank you
