That's a fantastic guide, thanks for posting. My 9 year old lab has hip dysplasia, but we rescued her when she was already an adult so there was really nothing we could do as a puppy to prevent it. When we first got the diagnosis I immediately got pet insurance as a way of planning for the future. I also got a good orthopedic bed that's firm enough to properly support her weight (which I am also extremely careful to keep within the desired range for her size and age). It's not easy at times but for now it's been manageable. Who knows if in the future she'll need surgery or if it will worsen or stay the same, but I'm optimistic that I can provide everything she needs to lead a normal life. Another thing I've recently been using is an Ortocanis hip brace for dogs. I found it online and decided to give it a try, heck I'll try anything if it means helping my dog! The truth is it makes a noticeable difference, especially in mornings when she's stiffer or on days where I know that our activity level is going to be higher than usual. I don't know if this a solution for everyone that's in a similar situation, but I do think it's worth looking into.

Thanks for the very clear guide to HD @Lucy Are there any plans for a similar guide on Elbow Dysplasia which seems to be more prevalent amongst younger dogs.

There are a lot of good quality memory foam beds on the market, it can be so difficult what to choose for the best. Orvis in particular do lovely beds. Amazon also have a good range. My girl hasn't really taken to memory foam despite two lots of surgery but she loves her 3 peaks scalloped dog bed. I bought the XL size and added some super soft luxurious blankets. She seems really content.

You really need your vet's advice on that, or the advice of a properly qualified canine physiotherapist. Swimming in warm water, in very controlled conditions, is very different from free swimming in a cold pond. Plus some types of joint problems are actually better off using exercise with some weight bearing to stablise the joint - a water treadmill is used for this rather than free swimming. It's impossible to say what would suit your dog without a professional assessment.
