We've had our lab pup a week now, he is 9 weeks old today! His house training is going great as far as he is really grasping that outside is the toilet not inside. He whines or stands at the door when he needs to go. However, if you don't get to the door within literally 5 seconds he will walk away and pee in the house. He hardly even gives you time to realise where he is and what he wants before he gives up waiting! How can I make him realise that we are going to let him out and that he just needs to give us a second to get to the door as we're all not as speedy as a hyperactive puppy ?
Hi there - you can't. You can't expect a 9 week old puppy to give you a second to get to the door - you have to be faster than that! So you have to take him out before he needs to go to the door. Because, as you've found out, when a 9 week old puppy needs to go, he needs to go.... Whining at the door and waiting to be let out comes a bit later.
Hi and welcome. As @JulieT says at 9 weeks old your little one just can't hold it in. We constantly took our boy out in the first few weeks, after each nap, each meal, each playtime, and if he didn't go then we kept a very close eye on him, running him out when we thought he needed to go. At least you get a whine even with no notice, all we have ever got is a Children of the Corn stare (and that's all we get now too!)
You have a few more weeks of "sudden weeing" ahead of you. All you can do is take him outside often until his little bladder increases in size. I was in and out every 20 minutes until 12 weeks old and even that didn't prevent some accidents. Hang in there, in a few weeks it'll all come together.
