I'm looking after my friends Westie today who's called Poppy because she was born on Remembrance Day. I chose Mabel for my puppy's name because it means loving and beautiful. I wondered how others went about deciding on a name.

Willow was named after a willow tree at the breeder's that she could always be found making mischief under. When we buy our new place in Spain, we're going to plant a willow for her :)

Shadow was just a name we liked. It's quite fitting as he's always right by me.

I have had dogs all my life and never got to name one of them!!

When we got Tatze my son was visiting (he lives in Germany) and I was feeling soft so I let him name her - her name means 'paw' in German and she's named after a guide dog friend of his. I wanted her to be called Pepper.

Boogie, my gorgeous Heinz 57 boy from Battersea Dogs Home, who lived to 19 years (and I name myself after here) was named by my friend when we couldn't think of a name.

All my other dogs Skipper, Janie, Gavin and Callum were rescues so already had their names. (Irish water spaniel (ish) Jack Russell and Cavaliers)

My other two pups Gypsy and Twiglet are Guide Dog puppies - so came to me with their names.

    :)

Holly was our Christmas present to ourselves so we chose a seasonal name.

I wanted a dog, very, very badly. It was always going to have to be a joint venture between myself and my OH, because we both work and having a dog was going to mean us both being more flexible about working hours so we could provide enough care for him.

I'd been wearing OH down over a number of years....eventually, he sort of agreed we could have a dog. Pressing home my advantage quickly, I asked OH what he wanted to call the dog and he said "Charlie".

I had an appointment booked to start viewing puppies the very next day....

I wouldn't have called him Charlie left to my own devices. However, I don't really care what my dog is called so long as I've got one, and as it turns out he is a right Charlie at times....

My husband want to call him Messi, after Lionel Messi. I said no way. Our vet always calls out the first name, followed by your surname. I didn't want to sit in the vet's waiting for the call Messi Unsworth! I wanted a down to earth name so I called him Fred.

I bet "Charlie" sounds a lot better in a French accent, too :)

I was driving along when I heard on the radio "Rorke's Drift" and thought Drift would be nice name for my Lab. 6 years later I had another Lab and thought of calling him Flute, but when I put him down in the garden I suddenly thought he had to be "Rourke" (slightly different spelling:()

Our first lab who entered our house was named by our children. She was called doerak, in English it will be translated as naughty.

Our 2nd lab who is now 10 years is called Euan, I wanted to have a Celtic name for our male dog. Euan is much like our oldest son Johan, and therefore I liked it very much, it fitted into our family name.

The 3rd male lab got also a Celtic name. He is called Finn. Most of the time we call him Finny, as he is into a lot of mischief. Our children like the name also, so as we all agreed, Finn it would be. His name from the breeder is hurricane. What we didn't know was that Finn was a rather popular boys name in holland.

Here in France all pedigree (LOF) dogs are registered with a name beginning with a specific letter of the alphabet. pedigree cats follow the same regime. My original name was Isis as we were hoping for a black girl in 2013. Having been disappointed that only 2 girls were born in a litter of 11, and we were number 3 on the waiting list for a girl we had to wait for nearly 9 months for our girl to be born. The prefix letter for 2014 was "J" so I had plenty of time to choose a name that she could be registered under and that was our choice. After searching through baby names, French names and finally into Greek and Roman mythology! Finally our pup, who still had not been born became "Juno" after the Roman Goddess. Here in France it is said with a soft "J". Her best friend, another chocolate girl, is Jen and a Lhasa Apso which has fallen in love with Juno is Jasper :D

We chose myfanwy as my husbands parents were Welsh. It means Beloved. A Welsh poet wrote a poem for his wife and titled it Myfanwy (beloved). The Welsh male voice choirs have a beautiful tune set to it.type in Myfanwy and the tune will come up. We call her Myfi for short.
Her kennel name is Myfanwy Buttercup. We love the name.

I've been somewhat awol, what a lovely thread to come back to read...
My Husband wanted a dog for over 10 years...during that time we would both come across names and say that would make a good dog name .When he finally wore me down and I agreed we were watching the Series about the American forensic serial killer Dexter......
It became quite apt when we realized he had such a brittle tail....our kitchen looked like a scene out of CSI on many occasions x

Chepi is North American Indian (Chesapeake Bay Area) and means Fairy or Ghost. I think of her as a little fairy.
The name is one I researched for a Chesapeake Bay retriever pup I was searching to get. It didn't work out but I saw a 6 month old FL lab at one of the Chessie breeders and fell in love with labs again.
Couldn't think of another name that I liked as much as Chepi.

I wanted something Scottish so we called our last pup Nevis which I really liked. Our new pup we called him Baxter for the same reason though hubby says if we get a second pup later on we could call it Campbell and have all the soup makes  We have nicknamed Baxter the soup dragon ;)

Ahh what beautiful replies everyone, how fascinating and thank you for sharing. I also like the name meadow but it's my baby nieces middle name, so that didn't seem right to use it. She's called Piper Meadow with a name like that I'm hoping she turns out to be a singer.

Belle, our rescue mongrel (not puppy - but name unknown), was going to be called "Pinny" because OH had a dream about it, but when we collected her from the kennels, she was just so pretty she HAD to be called Belle. Pinny survives for a future dog...

Wispa is named after the chocolate bar, as my youngest son had originally wanted us to have a chocolate lab. He and his friends thought it would be funny to hear my (loud-voiced) husband calling 'Wispa'! She's (dark) yellow not chocolate and there's a Wispa Gold chcolate bar, so we still used the name.
Our first lab was Penny and was black. As she was still quite young when she died, we didn't feel ready to have another black lab, so deliberately chose a different colour. However, when our other dogs died and Wispa needed a companion, we then got Tuppence - our second black lab.

Barney is named after Barney Stinson - a character from "How I met your mother" series that we've been watching back then. The girls are named after classic cars. Shelby - my husbands dreamed black Mustang Shelby. Her pedigree name is Eromdop Maria so we often call her Shelby Maria. Her daughter that we kept is named Amegilla Eleanor Alfacute - Eleanor is another classic Mustang if you don't know. Our planned yellow girl will be named Christine Fury after Plymouth Christine :)

Sage came with her name and I just never changed it :) Mia(cattle dog) got her name because I was going through a list of war dogs and SAR dogs and I just really really like that name :)

    I love the name Sage!

I thought Poppy was a really pretty name, particularly for a reddish coloured dog. It is a very common dog name in the UK, but no one has ever heard it here in Germany, so I am always having to explain to people that a poppy is a pretty red meadow flower... Mohnblume in German.
