How important is the 5 minute rule for puppy exercise?

5 mins per month of age. Does is apply to gentle walks or just running and and playing fetch?

I'd like to take Hunter (12 weeks) on the morning school run which is about a 30 minute round trip at normal speed, is this too much even if we walked slowly? And if so, what sort of age will he be able to walk with me?

He also does a training session and plays fetch outside each evening, I don't want to risk joint issues in future.

The 5 minute rule is purely a guesstimate. There is no science behind it. If you amble at Hunter's speed he should be fine. Keep his fetch sessions low impact (easier said than done with a rambunctious puppy!)

I'd err on the side of caution. You do not want to go too far pressed by the need to get to school on time. Perhaps you can put her in a stroller on the way there, and then let her amble back home. Make sure she is comfortable walking next to the stroller before attempting such.
