Hi all, I'm new here and this is my first post. I have a six-month-old ivory lab Who just had her surgery on Friday. She is already completely back to normal and back to her energetic self. There is no way to keep her from jumping and running. Unless I guess we kept her on a leash 24 seven. Is it really necessary to keep them on the down low for 10 days? No long walks or dog parks?
Best to be on the safe side, though a vet I walk with let her dog off the lead after four days! However, her Lab was older and rather quiet. Short lead walks are fine, or even medium ones after seven days, but I wouldn't recommend longer ones. Your pup is only 6 months old and should be on fairly short walks anyway.
Thanks Stacia. I'm a new dog owner. Why should she be on short walks? We go on 30-45 min walks daily or when we go frisbee golf she comes on a long lead. Usually 45 minutes... is this bad?
My girl is being spayed tomorrow and I will follow the pattern I did with all my other bitches . First week or so , short walks strictly on lead, then off lead or long line but only short walks with no leaping around for another four or five days , gradually building up to normal . As @Stacia rightly says, your 6 month old shouldn't be having walks of more than about 30/40 mins or so due to her developing tendons which can be damaged , joints too, if they are walked too far . I do think though , that a lot depends on the type of walks , on softer surfaces like grass, the impact is much kind than on hard surfaces, but I also believe that just as much, if not more, can be caused by charging up and down stairs or jumping into the back of cars ! This recovery period will soon be over and then normal service can be resumed , whilst mine will just be starting !
Hi @Casale , welcome to the forum. I have a 13 month old black lab, Cassie who although not my first dog is my first Labrador. She had her first season 2 months ago and I had to do on lead walks only for nearly 4 weeks ago which I thought would be really difficult but it wasn't at all, only for the first day or two, when she looked at me as if I'd forgotten to do something So 10 days shouldn't be too bad, it would be as well I think to allow everything to heal up as gently as possible.
With Cooper and Tilly, it was on lead walks and now swimming for the first 10 days. We had Cooper on sedatives to keep her quieter for the first week.
