Re: how much do folks train.... All so different! We are trying to get Amy more interested in fetch to keep her busy during our walks.
Re: how much do folks train.... We don't do loads of training. Rileys working lines and gets two walks a day about 45 mins - 1 hour. Depending where we're walking will dictate how much training we do. Probably no more than 10 -15 mins in any walk and sometimes none. We may do a short session or two at home through the day but they'll be 5 - 15 mins. I do sometimes do random long sits through the day....while making a cuppa or lunch for instance.
Yes Angela , for Sam the Wabwador ;D ;D Now if they ask what Millie is, I dont mind, havent got a clue myself ;D
Re: how much do folks train.... I had to laugh at the comments about pure bred/crosses etc. On my walk today I met a lady with a dog breed I wasn't sure about - I thought it looked like a setter, but with a colouring of black and brown (the same as a rottie cross I know) I asked her if her dog was a cross breed. Well.......I shall not make that mistake again. I spent the next 10mins of our walk proclaiming the beauty of her wonderful Gordon Setter and how justly she had deserved all her best in show awards.......ouch! I REALLY should have known better. In my defence....I am RUBBISH at dog breeds.
Re: how much do folks train.... Gordon setters are beautiful but you don't see many of them, an easy mistake to make
Re: how much do folks train.... A good friend brought her pup in for first vaccs recently. Was embarrassed to admit I'd never heard of a Lucas Sporting Terrier....I'm frequently asked if my two labs are crossbreds as well
Re: how much do folks train.... Yes - but the pond was HEAVING with labs! And one of the women who asked me, raised her eyebrow disbelieving lay at me and told me HER lab was from working lines and was I sure?? Grrrrrrrrrrr ...

I am clearly rubbisher... it is obviously a mine field this asking about dog breeds... have resolved to say in future "oh, s/he is lovely, obviously a pedigree... but what type...?".. in future...
Re: how much do folks train.... That sounds like a good plan Julie. Of course Sophie comes home saying....."I would have known, mum, there are 3 of them in the kennels just now". Where are your kids when you really need them : LOL Jac
Re: how much do folks train.... The man who stops me trying to wield a chainsaw at our out of control trees has a massive lab with Gordon setter several generations back and as a result is a pretty big lab with tan points. Lovely looking dog, he's always getting asked if it has Doberman or rottie in it
Re: how much do folks train.... That's a breed I've never heard of/seen either....googled them as well. I wouldn't have realized it was a purebred either!
Re: how much do folks train.... I knew a Gordon Setter a decade ago and haven't seen one since. Like Julie - I play tug of war with my dog! Thanks, Julie, for making it safe to finally confess Now that Obi has got a bit of muscle on him people don't ask me any more what he's crossed with (though he is by no means a chunky dog). Instead they (some people) ask what his pedigree is. I say "X, Y and a bit of Z". This prompts "oh no, he can't have X lines in him, they have a much broader head/bigger butt/thicker chest/darker nose/whatever". Some people will always find something to feel superior about.. As far as training goes, we do an hour of obedience class on Thurs and an hour of flyball on Sun. Other than that we do a few 10 min sessions a week and a couple of minutes on other days. So, we don't do a lot.... We do a 40 min walk each morning and on Mon, Tues and Weds Obi goes to daycare which is mad pay all day. Sat, Sun and every second Friday (my fornightly day off) we have a long, off lead walk and a visit to the dog park (more crazy running and wrestling). He's not working lines - just a somewhat energetic dog.
Re: how much do folks train....
Like Julie - I play tug of war with my dog! Thanks, Julie, for making it safe to finally confess
Hooray! And phew - I'm not alone. I feel liberated now my secret is out in the open!
Re: how much do folks train.... I play tug-of-war with Lady too and she works in the winter so she can distinguish pulling on a toy with me to play and not pulling on anything else. I say "Go on make a kill" and she grabs the tugger and pulls then if I let go she shakes it, runs round the garden with it and comes back for another go waiting for me to take hold again. I think it's what dogs do in the wild - cooperate to pull prey apart. We have an old football we do it with too. Great fun all round!
Re: how much do folks train.... Oh great I can confess then too. I play tug of war with Brodick, but only with his Tuggie snake, nothing else, and only in the house/a garden, not on walks. he loves it and play growwwwwwwls and flips over on his back and gets dragged about by me on his back (loves that bit the best I think), but he will always stop tugging when I say so, and give it back to me... I play Chasy with Cuillin, only with a football and only in the house, or in my sister's garden. she LOVES this game, charges about with me in hot pursuit tail wiggling like the clappers with the ball in her mouth and me saying 'Chasssyyyyyyyy' to her. she knows this won't happen anywhere else, or with anything else other than her football. I never play games with the Dummies, and they have both learnt now that they are not for Chasy games with either me or each other, they are for doing retreivingy stuff...
Re: how much do folks train.... I can see the advantages of playing tuggy as a reward that is easy to use if played properly and is recyclable. But it is definitely not something I do with my dogs. I have got no prove that it can cause hard mouth but I have a sneaking suspicion that it could compromise a dog's soft mouth. There are so many other rewards I can use that I don't feel the need to play tuggy. Also no games of chase I'm afraid. :
Wow....I'm in awe (and I'm a terrible rule breaker I fear). I haven't dared break the NO CHASE rule yet... I might though. Hmm... he did leg it with my iphone yesterday, clearly wanting a chase, though. So I might leave it a bit until he is generally a bit better behaved...
Re: how much do folks train.... yes I do feel a bit wicked when I play Chasy, and it did take Cuillin quite a while to learn that Chasy only occurs in certain situations defined by me.... I still vividly remember chasing her round the park with her ball early one morning when she was about six months old, she was having a great time and wouldn't recall, she was going to day care at that point and I knew that the day care van was trundling its way towards my flat to pick her up while I was chasing about trying to grab her in the park...I think it was that experience that made me introduce the Rules of Chasy! Cuillin is very obedient now mind you, and I wouldn't think about playing chasy with Young Brodick! he doesnt seem that interested in doing that with humans fortunately, he and Cuillin do plenty of it....
Re: how much do folks train.... Yes there is a risk of producing a hard mouth in the dog doing tug-of-war, but so far all ok with Lady. I couldn't guarantee the same with any other dog though so if you intend to work your dog it's probably best avoided. She has a very soft mouth for field work although I haven't tried the raw egg trick yet. ;D
