How should I remove a 'pinched' item from a puppy's mouth?

We have a lab puppy joining our family next weekend - and unlike my other 2 labs, I'm going to attempt some gundog training with this one!

With two young children it's inevitable she will occasionally get hold of something she shouldn't! - how do I take it out of her mouth? Of course to her it will be a prized possession and I don't want to ruin any retrieving skills down the line by doing this wrong!

Please can anyone tell me the correct way to deal with this?

Swap for a treat - the smellier the better :)

Most definitely teach swap for a treat and leave to try and stop the pick up to begin with.

Depends how valuable to you or dangerous to puppy the swiped thing is. No matter how you try to puppy proof some of those valuable or dangerous things might get into the puppy mouth and then I just reach and take it out. Swapping otherwise.
