    Hi folks,

Not been on here for a while, hope everyone is well.

We are in the process of having a massive downstairs extension to our ground floor which will include a new patio area and lawn and when it's completed we want Bob to toilet at the bottom of the garden. How would be best to train this? While we are having the extension done we've been taking him out on the lead for his toileting as it's so messy out there so he's not been in our garden for ages.. so I think once it's all completed we will have a really good clean slate to start with.

    Thanks for any advice

    xx

Having been a total failure at trying to get Dexter to go in our garden full stop I'm probably not the best to advise....but when I was trying to do it I was putting him on the lead , taking him out with some tasty treats and my clicker in the hope that when he did it ,I could give him an amazing food reward and through repetition we would get it......my only interaction with him was me saying 'wee wee time' if he didn't do after 5 mins or so I took him in and tried again in 30 mins .I couldn't crack it though......there are other members that have and as know guide dogs have to have a spending area....I'll try and see if I can find one of Mags previous posts as I know this has been asked before x

Could you fence off a small area initially? I used wire fencing (only about 2ft high) to enclose a small area of patio/bark-covered border when each of mine were puppies. I then trained them to use that as their spending area, using commands and treats. Then I eventually took the fence down again and they (usually!) continue to use that part of the garden as their spending area.
