Its our fish ! Six years ago, we bought two Comet fish , they were about 4 inches long .They have lived happily in our larger pond along with goldfish , koi and other fish and are now 12/14 inches long and very tame indeed, in fact they will feed from my hand . Something has taken one , and no doubt being disturbed , dropped my poor comet round the back of the pond . Nell alerted me to it , it was still alive, just . I know this must sound daft, but I blew gently an inch from its mouth, put it back , held it upright , but it turned onto its side immediately , so I tried again . It is now upright but I don't think it will live , it could have been out of the water for some time . Our pond has netting over it but it wouldn't stop a determined heron or even a cat , I know its not Nell , she couldn't possibly pick one up and Sam never has shown any interest in the fish . I do so hope it survives , and if it does , I think I`ll have to find someone with a huge pond where they can live out their days , sad x

It isn't looking great , he/she keeps flipping over onto its side . I am convinced that a bird, probably a heron , was the attacker , all the fish have gone down to the bottom of the pond , obviously frightened . Cant do any more now x

So sorry to hear. I also have Comets. A few died so I started reading up on them. One of the things I read was to put the sick fish in a separate bowl of clean water. I'm guessing in the case where something in the pond water could be causing problems. I suppose quite different in your case.

I was very upset for weeks when the fish died. In my case, I'd added new fish from someone's pond (she wanted to get rid of her pond) and I just knew after a few days I'd done the wrong thing.

I feel for you. They're not just fish when they're your fish.

So sorry Kate. I had goldfish for about 20 years, they were all very tame and one day I cleaned out the pond and the poor wee mites had nowhere to hide from the dreaded Heron. I was so upset.

I'm sorry, Kate, fingers crossed for your little Comet fish. It sounds like you've been a very conscientious fish owner, covering the pond. Could you adapt the netting?

Thank you , I did feel a bit silly writing about fish, but yes, they are ours and we try to care for them as well as we can , filters, fountains , the lot !
Sadly, my fish has died and it was a heron , he tried again early this morning but couldn't get past the netting that he shouldn't have been able to get through the first time . He must have dropped the fish when something disturbed him , most likely Nell as she alerted me by barking , and that's when I found our poor comet .

So sorry Kate about your fish. Could you not get a plastic Heron and put it by your pond. People say it stops another Heron landing by the pond. I don't know if this is true or not. Maybe someone else may know. Good girl Nell for letting Mum know.

Sorry to hear about your fish.

I have five in a fountain pond and each has a name. I have a chat with them several times a day and I keep their pond immaculate. I've been worried about one for a while, he has a bent tail and swims funny. You can't get vets for fish :(

Sorry , it was a Golden Orfe that I lost, but a few others are missing as well . The two Goldens were so tame , I used to say that they knew my voice, which is pretty silly really , but we do so love our fish , I know its nature but ...
