Re: insurance........sorry me again Hi, Well the vets Ive been going to are the PDSA, Ive found them really good. Im on benefits though, and you can only go to the PDSA, if you are on housing benefit, which I am so they suit me. You have to make a small donation each visit, and I will have to pay for Otis to be castrated, which will be about £80 I think. Obviously they aren't for everyone, but if your poor like me (!) theyre great .
Re: insurance........sorry me again Maggie, have a google of 'dogs trust neutering voucher'. You should be entitled to their reduced payment scheme, where you would pay only £30 towards the cost. Check with your local council, or the dogs trust directly.

Re: insurance........sorry me again the insurance thing is a real dilemma - what is annoying is that it is impossible to work out your own level of risk - for example what percentage of labs get xyz condition. It's all fear based - if you dont' get the cover you'll probably be in for horrendous bills etc. I looked really carefully a couple of years ago for a policy that didn't have too many get outs and exclusions and the premiums for those was really high especially with a second dog so I opted for savings instead. I put £50 per month per dog into a savings account so now have over £3000 earning interest which had been untouched. When I took Rusty recently with "limp tail" (another story I knew what it was from reading about it on here the vet had never heard of it) it costs me about £70 for the consultation and some metacam. Normally I would have just paid it - insurance after all wouldn't have covered it but I was really strapped so dipped into the fund for the first time. I know I could be unlucky and have a big claim or two equally if I'm not I'll have a nice fund that'll buy me my next dog in about 10 years and a ready made fund to look after him with. Like everything else financial you have to be comfortable with your level of risk - do as much research as you can and do what you feel is best for you.
Re: insurance........sorry me again carol jasper goes in for a c/t scan on friday the cost of that is 1200, including the scan the cost so far are up to 1500, we have not even started any treatment yet
Re: insurance........sorry me again Lynne, you are right. Modern vet treatment is expensive. I want a low level of risk. I did not have insurance with my previous dog, Nicolae. Over his life he had: - ruptured disc in his neck - two dog bites - broken tooth and root canal - obstructed bowel - skin cancer - multiple fatty tumours removed - skin infections - suspected snake bite requiring monitoring - various minor things like ear mites - and probably some things I've forgotten... My current dog, Obi has insurance. If he lives to 12 (Lab life expectancy) it'll cost us about £3000 in insurance premiums. That is a LOT less than the cost of the list of things Nicolae had over his 14 years.
Re: insurance........sorry me again I'm anticipating a couple of hip ops in due course. I think they are at least £3000 a pop. We are not rich, but comfortably well off (well....until we have to fork out for Uni ;D ) Even so.....having to pay this amount of money out would not be something done lightly. Glad we got our insurance before thi hips were diagnosed
Re: insurance........sorry me again We don't have Hattie insured but as she will be 6 next week we are thinking maybe we should. Charlie has always been insured because he is a blinking nutter!! Every insurance website I go to does not have more than 1 dog insurance plan and Pet Plan didn't have a Labrador cross box to tick so I couldn't even get a quote but they had a Labradoodle box. It's a nightmare. Helen xx
