    Hi

I would just like to introduce myself and my 5 month puppy called Blue. We have had Blue since he was 8 weeks old, he's a very big boy for his age. He has stranger danger and if he could he would love to stay inside all day. My problems is that we can not get him to lie down on command and stop pulling on his lead, choking himself whilst doing so.

Any hints and tips will greatly be appreciated

    Thank you
    Natalie

Hi Natalie and welcome. There may be some articles on clicker training for what you are asking. I found clicker training to be really good and got a trainer in for an hour to get me on the right track.

    Hi Natalie and Blue

We're in Idaho and Bella is a 17 1/2 week old chocolate girl.

I second the suggestion of clicker training....it's a good way to keep things going in a positive direction, and is fun for the dog to boot! Also good for indoor activities this time of year!

We love pictures.... (hint hint) ;)

    Hello and welcome.

I would say you need to gently encourage Blue outside, to reassure him that strangers do not equal danger! When he pulls, stand still and refuse to take a step until he stops pulling, so he realizes there is no benefit at all to pulling; the only way forward is when he walks to heel. Easy to say I know - but it is the key. Do not lose your temper; stay calm but resolute, and only move forward when he is by your side. It may take some time, but don't give up - he will learn that pulling gets him nowhere, but walking to heel means he gets to move forward to the park or wherever it is that he loves best. :)

    Hi

Thank you all for your suggestions, he has good and bad days. He was much better walking on the harness, until he ate it, :D but I will purchase a clicker and try that.

I regards to pictures trying to upload but files are to big but will keep trying ::)

[/quote]Hi Natalie it might be worth seeing if there is an APDT Uk trainer near you who will be able to help you get going with Clicker Training. The trainers I went to ran a Puppy Playschool for the very young pups which helped the pups socialise and interact both with each other and different people in a well managed, calm, supportive, controlled environment and got us off to a very good start in using positive training methods..maybe you could find something similar in your area. Good luck. :)

Hi and welcome to you and Blue from Milly and I. Milly is now 13 months. There are some great articles on here in regards to clicker training the heel. Well worth the look. Good luck.

Hi Natalie and welcome to the forum! There's loads of great advice you'll find on here.

I am currently clicker training the heel for both of my pups and, in general, it's going really well.

What do you mean by "stranger danger"? Is he scared of strangers, or just won't approach them? If it's the latter, that may not be a bad thing - stopping dogs running up to strangers is something lots of us have to work on! Willow has a habit of barking at strangers when on walks, which I'm working on with the clicker, too. Let us know what he does, and we may be able to offer some more relevant advice.

Hi from me and Molly. She's 16 months old so we were at your sort of stage about a year ago. I found puppy classes really useful for helping loose lead walking - easier to practise in a boring indoor restricted space than outside. I learnt a lot from one of the other owners at puppy classes too and copied her approach of really focusing on my dog, chatting to her in a high pitched voice to hold her attention ('good walking, clever girl, good walking') and popping the occasional treat in her mouth.
For some months I drove to off lead areas and just practised lead walking in short bursts. Now Molly walks very well on pavements, though not so well in places where she is usually off lead - my fault for not proofing it.
I think puppy classes might help with Blue's socialization too.

Thank you all for your advice, Blue is getting better, still has the odd occasion when he thinks people walking behind him is coming to get him but just keeps on looking back to check where they are. Clicker training I'm a bit confused lol, so he listens to us when he wants too, which is most times.
Btw, I haven't posted a picture yet as I need to adjust the sizing as mine a currently too big to upload
