Hi guys! I have a 1-year-old that became very stubborn while on her daily walk. She is in good health and looks forward to going outside but she will stop and resist if she does not want to proceed in a certain direction. Have you experienced this before?
jeandecker76 Does the problem only occur if you move towards one specific direction? Was your dog frightened in the viccinity by something in the past? Did your dog step on something that hurt when walking in that direction? My guess is that you will not have noticed the aversive event. May I suggest you contact a dog behaviourist who will explain to you and then take you and your dog through some desensitisation and counter-conditioning procedures.
It may be because she wants to go to something she likes?? I know my girl chooses a route if she can smell something tasty , like an apple or water or something. Her nose never fails her. Can you follow her preferred route snd just see if it is to get to something nice. If not it may well be that she has been spooked or something. My girl’s senses are so much better than mine and can smell and hear so much more than I can.
My 1-year old does this all of the time. Usually I determine that she’s spotted a rabbit or squirrel nearby, and she doesn’t want to move as long as they’re in sight. I usually bring a bag of small treats on walks and will entice her with one to get moving again, but sometimes I have to just wait it out or drag her along. I never walk her without a harness anymore because she’ll slip out of her collar too easily at these times.
