Re: Itchy Obi Poor obi and what a giant cone the poor chaps got . :-\ I'm glad he seems to be improving and can now get a decent sleep (you as well ). Fingers crossed whatever it is has dispersed before his meds finish.
Re: Itchy Obi The cone is indeed massive, LOL. It had to provide front leg, back leg, paw, tail, chin, ear, eye and butt protection. All were targets in the 'scratch and chew' fest. Obi is happy to report that, though still a bit itchy, he is now settled enough to dispense with the cone. I wasn't chewing my leg just then, honest.
Re: Itchy Obi Phew! Glad the cone is not a 24/7 thing....you know the shudders I get when I think about it.... Glad he's starting to feel better!
Re: Itchy Obi Obi so glad you are feeling a little better today and minus your 'accessorie'. You look gorgeous as always x
Re: Itchy Obi That's a lovely pic of the gorgeous Obi. Still lookin' good Obi! (That bedcover colour suits you ).
Re: Itchy Obi Poor Obi, nothing worse than an itch, tell him I am itching in sympathy! However, he sounds to be improving, long may it last.
Re: Itchy Obi It is great news The vet said we might see improvement in 3 days but we saw improvement overnight. The steroid dosage starts to step down from tomorrow so hopefully the itch stays at bay.....
Re: Itchy Obi I hope it stays at bay for you. We had a jack Russel with a terrible grass Alergy. He ended up on cortisone permanently. Just a small daily dose but constant. Hoping this resolves itself for you. There is nothing worse than being itchy all the time.
Re: Itchy Obi Glad things are getting better. Can sympathize, as poor old Bones used to get quite itchy in the summer, too. Luckily only for a couple of weeks each year, and cortisone helped, but misery while it lasted.
Re: Itchy Obi Annette and Karen, did you ever see any side effects from the cortisone? Did Bones seem to get worse over the years or stay pretty much the same?
Re: Itchy Obi I didn't see effects directly from the cortisone; he usually just had one injection after weeks of trying to deal with the problem with lotions etc. He did have an enlarged liver when he was older. It is possible that the cortisone contributed to that, I suppose. But I couldn't leave him the way he was - he would get very red skin, and go almost bald on his chest and legs. I suppose it started when he was about five years old, and happened every summer after that. The cortisone injection really dealt with it though.
Re: Itchy Obi No he never showed any side effects from the cortisone. He lived a long and healthy happy life. The cortisone just meant he could be a normal dog and roll around on the grass and have no itchy skin from it. He did suffer considerably from the allergy though and was very raw especially his chest, tummy and nether regions as he would crawl along the grass to scratch his tummy often and that just made the reactions worse. He was so bad that he would take the skin off on a regular basis. So the cortisone for us was a much better choose than no cortisone
Re: Itchy Obi Glad Obi's improving. My last dog (Lab) had itchy skin which I tried to control as much as possible with diet, but at least twice a year we had to resort to a course of prednisolone from the vet. You may be lucky like us and find a really low dose does the trick - my Rolo's skin would clear up with 4mg for a couple of days, then scaled back to every other day for another few doses. Rolo didn't suffer any side effects and lived to well over 14 years, so if you have to go down the steroid route it's not necessarily gloom & doom. I think it's important to catch it early as on a few occasions I held off on visiting the vet and then Rolo ended up with infected skin, which of course meant antibiotics.
