We finally took the plunge and got our lab puppy after many months of deliberation, reading and wondering! We've had her two weeks so got her at 7 weeks. So a real baby. She's been a real sweetie but I'm sure we have loads of challenges ahead as she grows up! I thought we were as prepared as we could be (read loads, asked loads people questions etc) but now feel like I'm unprepared for how it really is. Like having a first baby I suppose! Good things....little chewing (although did eat my cesar Milan book on raising a perfect puppy...the irony). She's mostly laid back and sleeps till around seven in the morning. Things unprepared for....snapping and jumping! She keeps nibbling me and my son...any ideas on how to curtail this? I make a tssst sound which stops her most times but she's persisting! I've taken to ignoring her if she snaps but it's hard! Also, she gets HYPER when she sees us in the morning and when we've been out - I try ignoring her but she's bouncing of the walls literally! Also didn't appreciate how much time they'd need as a baby. I literally have to watch her/guide her all the time, or she's following me around! I have nothing to compare - does this all sound about normal?!
Re: Joining you...new puppy Rosie 9 weeks Hello and welcome from me and my almost two year old black Lab boy Sam Yes, all sounds about right for a Lab puppy I`m afraid , they do bite and hard too and whilst its normal,it should be discouraged so a sharp NO , remover her from the situation and distract her . There are others on the forum with pups, albeit slightly older than yours and I`m sure that they will empathise and advise . My current boy didnt ever bite or nip, but one of my old girls did , it isnt aggression, its just how they would play if still in the litter, rough You do right to ignore Rosie when she gives you a hyper greeting , the calmer you are around her, the calmer she will become and honestly, this does happen eventually
Re: Joining you...new puppy Rosie 9 weeks welcome and good luck, i have a 5 month old lab, my very first dog, i have been traumatised read every thing about labs, this site is brilliant, i didnt have much chewing, very little sleep, as for the nipping/biting/snapping, its a constant NO, reading on this site this is a normal thing with labs, jasper seems to have struggled with his teeth, we have had intervals of no biting, but sorry to say, mine still does this biting :'(, i now understand that this is when his teeth are coming through, you will gets lots of advice on this forum, when my son is due home from work, he bounces off the wall, he goes crazy , its as if he can tell the time, have you got any photos ?
Re: Joining you...new puppy Rosie 9 weeks Thank you Kate, I don't mind spending the time - I'm hoping it'll pay off but then I think...maybe I'm over fussing or spending too much time guiding her - maybe she'll be spoilt and grow up grumpy and demanding! Ha ha, I can't win! Great to find this site to find out what's normal! Just been outside and she's filthy again! Good job she doesn't mind the shower...! Why did we buy an almost white dog again??? Lol. Amazed how little she cares that she's covered in mud! Can't wait till we can get out on walks she is gonna love it!
Re: Joining you...new puppy Rosie 9 weeks Lynne, ha ha I think I might be joining you in the trauma stakes..! Ha ha. Good job she's a little sweetie and melts my heart thank you for your advice. I'll keep plugging away at it - as long as I know I'm plugging in the right direction! How do you put photo on?
Re: Joining you...new puppy Rosie 9 weeks Do you have a photobucket account ? If so ,upload a photo there and then copy the link code and drop it on here . if I can do it ( technophobe !!) anybody can

Re: Joining you...new puppy Rosie 9 weeks Hello and welcome to you and Rosie, from me and 15-month old Poppy! That all sounds perfectly normal for a nine-week old puppy. And don't worry about spending too much time guiding her - the more time and care you put into the first year, the better things will be! The puppy phase can be trying - but believe me, it does all calm down - the nipping stops, and while they are always happy to see you, the frenzied greetings become somewhat calmer!

Re: Joining you...new puppy Rosie 9 weeks Oh yes and it all sounds normal to me too. She'll be puppyish for about 3 years though, but gradually growing up all the time. Watch out for chewing skirting boards, doors, chair legs and cables. ;D
