Hi we have a yellow male lab who is currently 10months old. He was great from day with sleeping in his crate at bedtime and also toilet training so no issues there. However I think we overdid the socialisation side of things and he expects everybody to pay him attention when out walking on and off the lead and has developed a real tendency for jumping up and he is getting really quite big now.

We did have to put him in the kennels when we went on holiday in October for 9 days and he seems to have become even more excited since then, expecially when you come home from being at work or out for a couple of hours and I am putting this down so some form of separation anxiety from the kennel stay ?

We are lucky that I work from home 2 days a week but my husband works from home most days and the dog is really trying his patience at the moment as all he wants to do is play and jump.

Training tips to address this would be very welcome indeed !

He’s probably just bored. Young dogs his age need a lot of interaction, training and attention. They grow into lovely, calm companions but this can’t be expected at ten months old.

How about a bit of doggy day care to give your husband a break?

What @Boogie said...this was my lab all over at that age. I also work from home so it was definitely trying, let's just say. I got through this age with an off lead morning walk, kongs, chews, short training sessions, some short games (for example, having him wait in one room and hiding a treat in another room, then calling him to "find!"), and a late afternoon walk. But, despite my best efforts, this is definitely the time when the most things were destroyed (the carpet was dug up in several places, chewed shoes, and so on). This is just a really difficult age but my dog has really calmed down since (he's now 1.5) and is much easier. And some of the troublesome behaviours have morphed into cute ones, for example he used to nibble on my arm to get my attention, it really hurt! But since that never worked for him, it has morphed into him resting his head on my lap and giving me those sad puppy eyes when he wants a cuddle, so cute and works everytime :D But he no longer pesters me throughout the day like he used to; after his morning walk he's content to snooze, leaving me to get some work done. Then lunch time we have a play, then he's content again to chill out until I'm done with work. So it does get better :)

    hi,
We have a 13 month old chocolate lab and he was and sometimes still is exactly the same, he loves food and will now sit and wait when we come in with a treat reward after.
They do calm down but they just love people as you know.
Keep the faith, when Button was that age he drove us crazy I kept thinking where's my easy to train lovely puppy gone, lol!
We also went on holiday when button was that age too and he was just excited we were back, lol!
Hope it gets better let's know.
If you know the answer to calming them down when they want to play play with other dogs let me know, Emma and Button
