Just wanted to say hello to you all, so Hi I joined a while ago but didn't write anything, was just looking round. My name is Nikki, I have a chocolate lab called Ben, he is 5.5 months old. He lives with myself my husband and his bestest buddy, my 2.5 year son Harry We love Ben so much, and he is generally a very good boy, he has learnt some basic training, and also to ring a bell to go outside to the toilet. My main problem at the minute is him jumping up when people come round or if we are out, a lady had a real go at me yesterday whilst out as she had put a white gillet clean on to come to the dog park! I know he shouldn't be jumping up and she was the only person yesterday he did it to. Any advice on how to stop this would be great. Love this site talk to you all soon
Re: Just wanted to say Hi Welcome to the forum! Your puppy sounds lovely To stop jumping on other people you probably need to enlist the help of some friends who act as 'members of the public'. Arm yourself with tasty treats. Have Ben on a lead. Get the friend to approach your pup or walk past while you have Ben sitting and receiving a stream of treats. On each 'walk past' have the person come a little closer. If Ben makes a move towards the person have them immediately walk away. The idea is to teach him that it's more worthwhile to sit rather than jump and that jumping won't be rewarded with attention. Eventually you want the 'stranger' to be able to pat Ben while he sits for a treat that you give him, but that will take a while Don't rush it and go in baby steps. Practise this with all your visitors. You can encourage people to kneel down to pat him to remove the need for him to leap to try to get closer to their faces and, if he jumps, to immediately turn their backs on him. As for the lady in white at the dog park....well, that was not the most sensible wardrobe decision she's ever made!!
Re: Just wanted to say Hi Hello! Welcome from me and my Choc lab Charlie. Jumping up is tricky to crack, you need to work on it in all situations. There is a good vid here that might get you started: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lC_OKgQFgzw [quote author=Niknok link=topic=4969.msg62112#msg62112 date=1395299838] as she had put a white gillet clean on to come to the dog park! [/quote] However, no training in the world will stop your young labrador from jumping on people silly enough to wear white clothes to a dog park. ;D ;D ;D She was asking for trouble!
Re: Just wanted to say Hi Lol, thank you both for the help. And yes I did think she was asking for trouble, it just knocks and bit off my confidence. I worry enough as it is :-\ I'll start with some training and take it nice and show. Thanks again
Re: Just wanted to say Hi Please don't worry or lose confidence Labradors are very people oriented and just love to run up and say a big hi Your pup is just friendly and exuberant. With time and patience (and treats!) we can teach them to control this exuberance but, as Julie says, it takes a while, so don't expect too much of yourself too soon.
Re: Just wanted to say Hi Welcome to you and Ben from, Hattie 6 years and Charlie 3 years our rescue. Enjoy this friendly and helpful forum. xx
Re: Just wanted to say Hi Hi and welcome from me and Harley Jumping.......Harley is 7.5 months old and we are still working on this : some days she is brilliant and listens, other days she ignores me!! I do some training every day around this still, but she is learning, so stick in there White!! In a dog park!! Lol
Re: Just wanted to say Hi Hi Nikki, and welcome to the forum. The kikopup video posted by Julie is great. Good luck with your training.
Re: Just wanted to say Hi Welcome to the forum! Don't worry, you'll crack this - though I swear dogs just make a beeline for people wearing whit clothes.. :
Re: Just wanted to say Hi Hello and welcome from me and Lady (black aged 4) too. Yes I feel for you with the woman-in-white. Mine was a vision in pink out jogging when Lady was about 6 months old. I thought the brown paw prints looked quite fetching. ;D
Re: Just wanted to say Hi [quote author=Niknok link=topic=4969.msg62119#msg62119 date=1395302096] And yes I did think she was asking for trouble, it just knocks and bit off my confidence. I worry enough as it is :-\ [/quote] About the 3rd or 4th time I took Charlie to the beach, a Japanese family, with lots of kids talking in excited voices, arrived to take photos (clearly on holiday). They were truly amazingly well turned out in smart, pristine, shades of pastel and white - pleated skirts, white socks.... This was the busiest off lead dog walking beach in Cornwall. I swear every young Labrador there immediately made a beeline for them. I managed to rugby tackle Charlie as he took off. Thankful that the culprits didn't include my dog, I watched them leave the beach, madly brushing themselves off... There but...
Re: Just wanted to say Hi [quote author=Niknok link=topic=4969.msg62112#msg62112 date=1395299838] and also to ring a bell to go outside to the toilet. [/quote] That's a brilliant idea! Welcome to the forum.
Re: Just wanted to say Hi Thank you all so much for your words of wisdom, kind hellos and some story's that made me laugh. At least I know it's not just my Ben bless him, I'm sure we will get there,no matter how long it takes
Re: Just wanted to say Hi Beautiful photo To actually put the photo in your post you'd need to find a way to get the hosting site to give you a 'share via social network' or 'copy bbcode' option. Instagram doesn't allow you to do that but Flickr does (others do too but I only use Flickr).
