Hello Everyone, On Sunday we adopted an 8 week old Lab Puppy from a rescue shelter. The shelter rescued these puppies from someone who was intent on drowning them so I'm glad they stepped in. After a couple of hours in the car we settled on the name "Kaeda" which roughly translates in Japanese to "Little dragon" (We didn't actually know that, we just like the sound of the name and google'd it later) She didn't care much for the ride home, whined a bit until she fell asleep So here we are. Puppies are a lot of work. We are crate training here, and she isn't thrilled about it. The first night we set her in the crate in the bedroom with us she cried probably about 3 hours. We were actually laughing at some point. I didn't know a puppy that small could make that loud of a noise, and I didn't know dogs could make that kind of a noise. She sounded like some kind of monkey-rooster hybrid. The few seconds of silence we got sounded like sweet mana from heaven until she'd start up again. Eventually she settled down and tired her self out. The second day we woke up with renewed vigor (and a lot of caffeine) I went to work and my girlfriend took care of the dog. Meals were fed in the crate. Time was spent in the crate while we were doing things around the house between play sessions. We had to go out for a couple of hours and crated her. We know never to let her out while she is whining (Barring potty time) we were holding out for 2 minutes of silence before we praised and let her out. A few time she was oh so close, but would make noise. But when we came home from being out we were not greeted by whining, but by silence. She patiently waited for us to let her out, then took her outside for play and potty. The second night went much better. She whined about 10 minutes before going down for sleep. She needed to go out about 3 times throughout the night, but pee'd each time with no fuss. She is getting good about going to the door and holding it, but she has accidents still. The cats are starting to get along with her, and we are slowly learning how to do this right. This site has had a lot of great reading on it, and I look forward to experiencing the journey with you all. I think we'll be just fine.

Re: Kaeda Hi and welcome from Harley (14 month old fox red lab) and me She is a cutie I'm glad she is starting to settle in her crate I wouldn't leave her to be quiet for 2 mins - at that age it is a long time. I would wait maybe 15-30 seconds then respond.
Re: Kaeda What a gorgeous girl. Welcome to the forum! There is loads of good advice here. Hope you are enjoying Kaeda jac and Lilly (4 1/2 )
