My wife insists I ask this , I'm new here so forgive me . She is just wanting to learn all she can about our boy and a couple of things that eerk her ! Jax is 7 months old , he's not fixed or anything . Well oh my goodness I can't believe I'm about to type this . Lately during random times of the day Jaxs "lipstick" has been coming out . When it does this he kind of wimpers and acts like it's hurting him and he will lick himself as long as it's out. He's not attempting to go after anything that he would assume to be a female either . When he does think a stuffed animal or my wife's favorite pillow (lol) is a female there's no lipstick . However the crying and wimpering and the licking is odd to me . Sorry for all the post folks, I'm new here aND as I've said Jax is my daughter dog (she's 2 ) . Also Jax helps me a lot with my ptsd. He's not just a dog to us so if there is any issue I feel like I need to handle it asap.
Hi, I had this with my pup when he was around 4-5 months old but it happened after he humped his teddy, which got taken away after 2nd time. This is what my vet explained to me: if his lipstick is stuck out for a while, it can become dry and also infected. Don't touch with your hands as can make it worse but you can put a cold wet flannel on it to help reduce and go back or you can use salt or sugar water to aid osmosis of your pups body fluid. Salt is more preferable as sugar help attract bacteria. I only used a cold wet flannel. If doesn't go back in around 15 mins, consult a vet as needs to be seen by 1hr. The first time it happened it lasted 20 mins and went back as my sister was dialling a vet, the next time only 10 mins and then never happened again. It is painful/uncomfortable for them so maybe try the wet flannel rather than leave him to lick it. Worked for me and don't worry, I posted on here to Edited to add: When you say his lipstick is out, do you mean just the tip or right out? As my boys was right out, I had a dog anatomy lesson with a lovely male vet
There is NOTHING that is too embarrassing to ask on this forum! Since I became a labrador owner I have had conversations here about everything. Really. Everything. I do mean everything. So ask away, someone here will definitely have had the same problem at some time....
That's his penis. You can say that, it often helps to use correct language. It's not unusual for male dogs to do that, it should retract quickly on it's own. I will forever have an image in my mind of looking over to see my black pup getting ready for a big poop on top of a white snowbank and just about splitting a gut laughing at the slash of pink in between his black self and the snow. But your pup sounds a bit distressed. And as said above, same as with human males, if his penis does not retract it will hurt and might occasion a Vet visit. It's called paraphimosis and if you google that up you'll find suggestions on how to help and one really strange one is to pack sugar on his penis. http://thebark.com/content/paraphimosis
that's very true - but lipstick is a common and descriptive word that is WIDELY used and accepted in dog circles - vets included, well it certainly is here anyway. Coco is very free with his, out when he's excited (I don't mean sexually - he's been castrated), when he's training, when we're getting ready to go out for a walk, when he wants to play and we're ignoring him - he's never had a problem with it not retracting - touch wood (pardon the pun ), but I'll certainly keep the wet flannel tip in mind. When I was a child, we had a photo of our Dalmatian leaping over the garden wall, with a red tulip flower just in line with his penis, so I always referred to it as his "tulip" after that.
It happened when my Lab was a pup and once it stayed out and he was most distressed, phoned vet for advice and putting a cold flannel on will help the erection to subside. As the pup grows this usually gets less.
Thankfully, I've never had to deploy a cold flannel (called a 'face washer' here...assuming I know what you are all talking about...).
LOL, if you want to debate semantics, I've never understood why you call your face cloths a flannel. Is it actually made of flannel? Gee, cotton flannel or wool flannel? Or is it a small square of terry towelling, like ours are? Which I think might be rough on a tender little penis.
Don't joke, that's in the link I put up. Frozen, brrrr. Wrap up a bag of frozen peas in a light towel and place over the area for 5 minutes at a time, which also helps to reduce swelling of the tissues. Packaged peas work well because they are very moldable around the dog’s anatomy.
ha ha ha just what I needed to cheer me up a dog penis debate so funny. Rory used to make tiny white puppy penis sized print stains on the sofa throw never told OH what it was he did ask a few times. Rory got better at not leaking so much as he got older no more penis prints!
