I've just ordered 2 kong goodie bones and I'm thinking of what to put in them. For the last 12 months I've been giving my two anco roots to chew but Scott seems a bit bored with them so I thought I'd try something new. Having scared myself off antlers and nylabones I decided to try the kong goodie bone. I need to be careful with my dogs as they can fall out over food so I've always steered clear of edible chews. There is also the danger one will eat it really quick without chewing properly incase the other tries to pinch it. : I will use their kibble in the goodie bones and their fishy treats but I was thinking of trying carrot or sweet potatoe. Just wondered if anyone gives their dog a whole carrot to chew? I was thinking of sticking as big a piece as I can in the end of the goodie bone. Likewise with sweet potatoe. This may be a daft question but do I peel the sweet potatoe ? I've never used one before : . Any other suggestions would be greatly received. ;D
Re: Kong goodie bone I give mine raw carrots on occasion. They are fine to be given them together, because a carrot isn't high value. With chews, I keep the pups apart because otherwise they resource guard, but they swap the carrots with each other and don't mind at all. They tend to shred them all over the floor and then hoover up afterwards. You can freeze the carrots too to keep them going a bit longer. Just keep in mind not to overdo it with the carrots, since they're quite high in sugar. I've not tried sweet potato - I'd be inclined to leave it unpeeled because I'm lazy
Re: Kong goodie bone Kenzi eats peeled Sweet Potato and enjoys it, it's peeled mainly because it's when i roast sweet potato for myself to eat/freeze, she'll only get a little cube or a few bits chopped into a meal. I am not sure why but the skins of sweet potatoes in the UK can look pretty battered so i would never think of baking a sweet potato with skins so Kenzi gets what i get
Re: Kong goodie bone No need to peel sweet potato if it's just for the doggie Try chunks of raw pumpkin too - I'd peel that though as the skin is tough when raw and hard to digest for a dog.
Re: Kong goodie bone I use fish4dogs seawraps in kong goodie bones - these are sticks of dried sweet potato wrapped in fish skin. I also can get 4 seabiscuits jammed in, but they don't last so long as he can just crush them through the rubber, then they just fall out.
Re: Kong goodie bone Thank you all very much. Looks like an interesting trip around the veg section in asda tomorrow and an order for fish4dogs. S&S will think its Christmas all over again. ;D.
Re: Kong goodie bone I've just received my kong extreme goodie bones. They are medium size for dogs up to 16kg !!!! I've found out technically I should have large but there wasn't a choice in size. I've looked on various websites and all kong extreme goodie bones are medium. I can't find any large. If size suitability is based on size of bone then it's not a problem they are big enough in size but if it's based on thickness of rubber I could have a problem. I will have to keep a close eye on them ( I do anyway : ). It's annoying I went for the extreme because they are for strong chewers if I'd gone for the standard I could've got large.
