    How long do Kongs last?

Do I need to replace them every now and again? Does the rubber deteriorate or corrode?

I have nine (!) for my pooches as I use them a lot and like to have a stock ready in the fridge.

Charlie (as a teenager) chewed through all but one of his puppy kongs. Two of his oldest adult kongs look to have cracks starting in them after about a year. I have about 15 kongs but they are in use pretty much all the time.

I only have one, but it's lasted since my previous dog was a puppy and still looks fine!

I had left Lilly's kong (accidentally) out in the garden all last winter and when I discovered it it looked a bit perished so I just bought a new one. It would have probably been okay but as we were "entertaining" I thought better to be safe rather than sorry.

I think Kongs are supposedly meant to be pretty indestructible - or at least not degrade over time, however working at the kennels I've seen some getting into a pretty poor state if they get left outdoors. If they get wet and dry repeatedly (and I mean left outside for weeks on end, not just getting washed etc) the I've seen what I can only describe as mould growing on them. Also in the frost and snow the rubber will degrade.

I think after a couple of years it's probably a good idea to replace them just to be on the safe side, but other than that they're pretty hard wearing - at the dogs home I used to soak mine in a bucket of anigene (veterinary strength disinfectant we cleaned the kennels with) to disinfect them before putting them through a hot dishwasher on a daily basis and they lasted really well.

Not so sure about the cheapy imitation ones though... Probably not as good.
