Rosamund I'm afraid I'd be inclined to ring the RSPCA. Especially if you think the dog isn't being cared for daily. It is in my opinion neglect.

They will keep your report anonymous. They will go to the house, if nobody is in and they can't see in they will leave a note saying they have been and they must be contacted in 24hrs or they can force entry.

My friend who has a house she rents had to do this to her tenant who she believed had left without paying the rent but left the dog.

It might seem a drastic action and hopefully the RSPCA will find nothing wrong but you'd feel worse if anything happened to the little chap. :(

Yeah- they'll know it was me for sure as I'm the only one who has a dog. They're really nice people but that doesn't make it any better for the dog..ok. I'll ring them. Agh.

You are doing the right thing. Even if it's tough with your neighbours. Even if you turn out to be wrong. You are still doing the right thing.

I just rang them. If they do leave a note they won't get a reply in 24 hours because they're away. My fear is that they will break the door down and the dog will be perfectly happy at a relative's house ( good for the dog of course) and my neighbours will kill me for being a busybody with no proof..oh we'll.. Too late now cos I just rang them! They just said they'd 'follow procedures'..Oh we'll. I feel bad but I can't bear to think of the dog in there.

Definitely the right thing to do and if the puppy is fine at least your neighbours will know you care enough to do something. They should be grateful and they shouldve given you a contact number for somebody just incase something happened anyway.

Don't worry you are in the right. :)

You have definitely done the right thing, Rosamund. Okay, so the puppy might turn out to be elsewhere, but the prospect of not having called only to discover it had been there all the time... Deep breaths. It is an anonymous report.

Well done :). I called the RSPCA after being told things from a friend about another friends dog, and I'm glad I did as the RSPCA are now monitoring them closely ready to come in if needs be again :)

Good for you Rosamund. You have done your best for the dog and that was the right and caring thing to do. The RSPCA will sort it out, they are the experts. No doubt they are used to this situation.

Re: Labrador Puppies Home Alone - your thoughts

I changed jobs and went from full time to part time and started to think about having a dog. So I researched doggy day care and found what I think is a good one. I asked them lots of questions and was shown around (I arrived without an appointment) and was given the price list of all the services they offer - they also do hydrotherapy and grooming. The place was very clean. Lots of separate arrangements for puppies and smaller dogs.
So I started to think it was possible to have a dog. Cost? Well, unfortunately (anniversary actually today) my mum passed away but she used to have dogs and left me enough money to cover dog costs for several years. This money is in a "My puppy" separate account and will be used just for her.
I have 4 weeks holiday during every summer (and 12 weeks off across the year), so I have planned for a pup to come home as close to those 4 weeks as I can; I am about 3 weeks adrift, so I have organised a close friend to come and puppy sit until the pup is old enough for day care. He will come on the 3 days a week that I work and stay the whole day. We both went to meet the breeders and explained his role and we were both assessed. I am giving him Pippa's books to read and we will work on the same commands etc.
I plan to do some short visits to doggy day care over my 4 weeks off in the summer so that the pup gets gradually used to it. By the time she has to go properly she will be about 4 months old.
I have told everyone that things will change when I have my pup; I won't be as available for going out - it's like having a baby again I should think.
Well, that's how I am managing to have a pup but if I could I wouldn't even be working 3 days a week.

Sounds like a good plan Jane. Dogs are very adaptable.

I work two days a week. Thursday mornings and Fridays all day. My husband also works two days, but not the same ones as me. If my husband is away then Tatze goes to the dog sitter for both, I drop her off on the way to work. Sometimes she goes to a different dog sitter. For holidays she goes to my friend (and I have my friend's lab when she goes away). Tatze is fine with all permuatations :)

When I worked full time, long hours, I had two Cavaliers. My Mum and MIL took it in turns to come and look after them.

I really don't believe in having dogs then leaving them alone as, like us, they are social animals.
