Dear All, I have a 17 week old labrador puppy who is on Dry food - Orijen Puppy Large. He was not eating well for a few days when he first came home and was under weight. He finally settled and loves his food. However I read yesterday a study on dog foods by FDA wherein the named a few dog food brands (grain free), including Orijen which can cause heart disease. (its a 2019 article) Can anyone help me - should I continue with Orijen or change and if so - to what? (Raw is not an option for me) He is wonderful, calm and loving puppy and I don't want to risk harming him in any way by giving him the wrong food. Thanks Monomita
Hi Monomita, welcome to the forum! I'm not an expert on the details of this but as I understand it there has been one study in California which found a link between grain free foods and heart disease. It concluded that some grain free foods may contain insufficient quantities of the amino acid taurine. Dogs with taurine deficiency are more at risk of heart disease. If you're happy with Orijen generally, you could have a chat with your vet about how to make sure your pup gets sufficient taurine in his diet alongside his kibble
Thank you ! that really helps. I am a novice at this.... so any advice helps. My puppy loves the Orijen Puppy kibble and I will check if we can add Taurine to his diet. We have been following the puppy handbook from Pippa and that as really helped us settle our boy into our home!
