Good-tempered, very agile (which precludes excessive body weight or excessive substance). Excellent nose, soft mouth; keen love of water. Adaptable, devoted companion. Intelligent, keen and biddable, with a strong will to please. Kindly nature, with no trace of aggression or undue shyness.

Yes that's absolutely fair....temperament and ability to work is part of the standard just sadly neglected in some corners of the labrador world :)

Yes, I'm never sure how temperament is tested in the ring. Much was always made of Romeo's expression in the judges' comments...

And I have to hold my hand up and say that if I ever get Charlie to meet the requirements of a show gundog working certificate I'd be pretty thrilled (to be fair to him though, under my pet training incompetence, a working line dog might also struggle). But I'll keep trying...

To provide credible proof of the natural working ability of a KC registered Gundog that has already proved it meets the KC Breed Standard by a qualification in the show ring:

    (a) The dog has been tested in line.
    (b) The dog has shown that it is not gun-shy.
    (c) For a Retriever, that it hunted for, and found, dead or wounded game,
    faced cover, and retrieved tenderly.
    [...]
    (g) For all retrieving breeds, that the dog entered water freely, swam
    and retrieved
    (h) The dog has not whined or barked in line. (Subject to the Breed
    Standard)
    (i) The dog has been under reasonable control. (Absolute steadiness is
    not essential)

How sad, Lauren, I can understand exactly how you feel. A few days ago a comment was made on a recent photo of him, by a breeder and shower of labs, they wrote " Good grief look at his head..." Now I particularly love his head, ;D yes, it might be on the large side, (he is still growing out of his puppy skin ) and usually he is wearing a bonkers expression... but I just adore his kind and funny face.

This should go to the people you met Kate and Lauren

Before you speak, let your words pass through three gates.
At the first gate, ask youself, "Is it true?"
At the second ask, "Is it necesary?"
At the third gate ask, "Is it kind?"

    - Sufi saying

This was posted on a facebook page where people had been criticising photos that were posted without the knowledge of the subjects. I thought it apt :)

Wow so many responses. Started a good debate here!

Of course I'm not by any means saying that all show people are snobby like that woman but obviously there are some that are.

No, her puppy didn't win anything either so I felt good about that haha!

Naya just out of interest which dog show is it your going to?

I'm going to a 'doggie day and fun dog show' in Stoke Gifford on Sunday 13th July. It's 5 mins away from where I live. There are 14 fun classes that you pay £1 for each entry. It's 11am-4pm with judging starting at 11.30am. Lots of stalls etched. Sounds quite fun :)

Stupid woman. I would much rather have a lovely labrador who is healthy fun loving and a pet than spend hours getting the poor thing to stand correctly. Sounds like she's more interested in showing than actually having the poor lab.

Pongo has asked me to tell you that he thinks Penny is absolutely beautiful, and he will happily share that view with any nasty person who suggests otherwise.

Late coming in but just wanted to say how rude and unkind those people sounded. Glad they didn't win!

There are some funny people about aren't there?

Many years ago one of my teachers said that in these situations you should ask yourself :
'Do I value the opinion of the person that is speaking? If yes, then, painful as it may be, take note of what they say and give it due consideration. If not, then it is just background noise - treat it accordingly!' ;)
