Hi all. Had a fantastic night with Rolo last night and I managed to recoup some sleep! Put him in his crate at 11:30, no crying at all. Set my alarm for 2am to let him out for a wee he was fast asleep. Had a pee, went back to crate no crying at all. More sleep for me! 4:30am second pee and went back to crate no bother I was over the moon! I just wanted to know if it's okay to lift his water at a certain time whilst he's so small and has a small bladder? He drinks like a fully grown dog and has had lots of huge pees today so I don't want to set him up for failure in crate by having too much water Xx
Good job during the night! Personally I would take his water away after around 9pm (assuming you fed him an hour or two earlier, and he had water with his food).
I used to lift water at 9 pm. Just make sure you don't have have any water bowls by his toilet area or he might go for the sneaky slurp when you take him out for last wees! I don't bother removing water now since she's well into her snooze by 9 pm.
I've never removed water from a puppy at night - I don't see any reason to do so. Dogs drink when they are thirsty, it's not like it's wine, tea, coffee - whatever that humans drink too much. If my puppy is thirsty, and drinks water, I think it's because she needs water. Both my dogs tank their water bowls as enthusiastically as though they have walked through a dry desert, and I've never taken them out to the garden over night. Betsy has never had an accident in her pen overnight either, although Charlie did do a couple of wees in his pen when he was tiny, but that's all.
I've never taken Bailey's water bowl up either - we also have one upstairs with us at nights, especially when we had a hot spell recently. We've been very lucky with Bailey as he slept through right from day one and he never had an accident in his crate or upstairs since we de-crated him. However I would say that Bailey has always been a grazer of food and water rather than a determined hoover upper of food and the only time he has a long drink is after a walk or when he's been playing with other dogs. Therefore I have assumed he will only drink when thirsty so I keep water down all the time, refreshed every couple of hours.
Thanks everyone, I took it away at 9:30pm, I think Rolo can drink A LOT and I think thats why he was up every two hours on the first few nights. Last night he went 4 hours no pee. Will only do this while hes small.
