Got another "come away from footballs" session today. Last session, he did ok - he always came away from the football. But he thought about it first. Once he decided to come, he came nice and fast. I'm thinking what to do about the initial pause though. He looked round, looked at me, looked back at the football and you could see him thinking "ok, I'm not getting the football...ok...I'll go get a bit of chicken then". How to get rid of that, I wonder? I know what I'd do for a cue like sit (repeat and reward the fast ones) but it seems a bit impractical for recalls. I'm not doing that many.... I could prompt a faster response by throwing something, or running? But I'd have to give up the recall "finish" of sit in front. Maybe that doesn't matter and I just work on the faster response?
Re: Latency on recall.... Hattie does this when I recall her she stops and scans the environment to see exactly what I want her to come away from then she comes back. Every now and then I run quickly in the opposite direction she promptly follows and gets a good reward this seems to sort it out but not permanently. I would be really interested to know how to overcome this too x
Re: Latency on recall.... But he DID decide to come back to you... Isn't that exactly what you want from positive training? HE makes the choice?

HE makes the choice? [/quote] Oh yes, I'm not using a line, I have someone controlling access to the football though! It's the last time I have a helper for a while though. I think I'll have to just go back to throwing/running/whatever to get that fast response for each new distraction and worry about the rest later. I can't think what else to do... Maybe I've moved on a bit too quickly (have the football bouncing now).
Re: Latency on recall.... I asked a similar question awhile ago but it was based on a retrieve. Scout will pause before he returns with the retrieve which can occasionally lead to him getting destracted. Heidrun and Rachael both suggested a click as soon as he picks up or, which is more relevant in your case, as soon as he turns to me. I will try and find the thread. Not sure if that helps you though. PS. Sorry still can't do links. : Its on the clicker board, second page, called 'A reward quandry'. Heidrun used it to improve Murrfi's recall.
Re: Latency on recall.... I'm not sure what the answer is but I would certainly be prepared to give up the smart finish, you can add that back in later I'm quite sure!
Re: Latency on recall.... I have been clicking on the look round....hmm...if that doesn't help, my rewards are not high enough value. I think that's right. It's gonna have to be rabbit skin travelling at speed, I think.... :

Re: Latency on recall.... ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D Well, it might have to be - he doesn't chase the real rabbits! The bank behind me was full of rabbits yesterday, playing in the sunshine, and he was still gazing at the bloomin' football!

Re: Latency on recall.... what i do with jasper is take him to watch a local football team and have him sit next to me on the lead, we go to the local parks kids playing ball, frisbee as soon as i think he is going to head towards a football i hold his ball up and throw it in the opposite direction, works every time
Re: Latency on recall.... If it were me I would call and then run in the opposite direction - that is the basis of the 'this way' exercise we are practicing. For Penny it's to improve focus on me and recall from dogs but I have used it for a cyclist too so I guess the skills are transferable! Edited to add: I think the running in the opposite direction gives added reinforcement to the command as it starts to mean "come now or you'll be left on your own" instead of "come, please"
Re: Latency on recall.... Could you do the recall near some trees and hide if he looks away?.... Or would he think he was now free to go play if you disappeared? ;D
Re: Latency on recall.... Thanks for the suggestions all, much appreciated. I can get always Charlie to recall - after much work - but overcoming his obsession that means the normal stuff - running away etc. - just has really little impact on getting that fast whip round that would indicate I'm heading towards something really reliable and a properly trained response. It might be better with a stranger as the football holder is his dog walker, so he is perfectly happy to sit at her feet for hours. Yes, I can bribe him with another moving object, eg throw a ball instead of using the ball as a reward, but I really want a properly trained recall if I can manage it.
Re: Latency on recall.... jaspers recall is brilliant, when i say i throw a ball in the opposite direction i am not recalling him away from anything, he as just looked over to kids playing ball then and only then do i get his ball out to focus on me rather than the kids playing ball i have trained him not to go over to kids playing ball his reward is to play with his own ball works for us
