Dogs have both been for their annual Leptospirosis vaccinations this afternoon , they don't have annual boosters of all vaccines but this one, for them , is important as they swim in rivers and lakes . For the first time our Vet explained that as it is now recognised that there are four different strains of Lepto , they would have one vaccination today to cover two and a free follow vaccination up in four weeks time to cover the others, has anyone else had this information ?

Yes, I have. My vets have been doing this since last year and my number 1 Lab had it done last summer. Number 2 Lab will have it when he goes in for his boosters in a month or so. It doesn't cost any extra (well at my vet) and once it is done, next year the dogs will only need one dose.

I hadn't heard of that, no. Although Charlie's boosters were a while ago now, so just 3.5 months till they are due (I had to check that, yes, beginnings of June is only 3.5 months away :) :) :) :) :) ), I'll ask, for sure...

Yep i learnt this with Maisie. She had her first set of jabs with the breeder and had Lepto 2 (so the orginal 2 strains). Then when i took her and her vaccination book along to my vets for her second set of jabs, they said they dont do lepto 2 anymore they do lepto 4. So she had her first lepto 4 instead of a second lepto 2 and then is meant to have her second lepto 4 on friday. And then she will be fully covered for all 4 strains. Not all vets do it though, although i was told there was a case of one of the new lepto strains in bristol i think.

I'll definitely be asking about this...Charlie is a horror for swimming in storm drains up at the Common (don't even think about the possible number of rats....). I see from his notes that he only has to go back for Lepto, nothing else, so I'll give them a call in advance.

Bracken has just had his Lepto 4, and Lucan is due his next month, yes it was 2 injections done 4 weeks apart. Our vets have changed to the new version as they have seen cases of Lepto in their practices around the east & mid Devon area.

There have been outbreaks of lepto in my area recently so my vet (which is a huge chain and taken over many smaller practices in the area) now does the lepto 4 vaccine as standard. Penny is due her booster at the end of next month so will be asking about it at that time.

The two shots four weeks apart is what Molly enjoyed at Christmas

    Re: Lepto vaccine

I asked about this at the Vets this morning, the Senior Vet investigated this thoroughly and sees no reason to give the extra vaccine over and above the annual booster in our area unless you are in contact with Pigs or you live on a farm where they maybe Rats as it's something to do with their pee. Of course stagnent ponds is another source. She also said that the 4 vaccine doesn't cover all strains of Lepto. x

I guess its " horses for courses " Helen , our two do run on farmland , plus swim in dykes etc . so the more cover I can give them, the better really , for me anyway :)
