Hello All, I always get such great answers and information from all of you....so here goes. Cooper (male yellow/white) is almost 15 months old and, lately, has started to lick mostly legs because weather is warmer and one does not wear socks! I dont mind several licks or even many licks but when is enough, enough?! I realize that it is fun to lick a leg when it has lotion on it, or because he likes the scent of a certain shower gel!!! but I wonder what is too much. So I pass this along...havent seen "licking" as a thread/subject, so hope I'm not being redundant!! Thanks in advance.
I think lots of dogs do that - mine certainly does and he is not at all fussy about the type of lotion. That said, for preference, he starts with my friend who is a l'occitane fan.... If you don't want him to do it, just treat it like you would puppy nipping. Stand up and walk away (removing the fun of your company - and your legs) whenever he starts. I don't care though, and so my boy is a terrible licker of people. He is a specialist in ears, his life's ambition is to make sure the human race has clean ears. Quite right too.
Lilly used to lick my body lotion off all the time, but now doesn't do it. She is obviously older and wiser My OH's old dog used to be a foot licking addict - smellier and sweatier the better. Lilly has no interest whatsoever in licking anyone's feet. Cousin Georgie on the other hand has licked everything and everyone constantly to distraction since a pup. She is still doing it into her 3rd year but no so bad. What made THAT worse was her poo-eating tendencies They are all different I guess.
I truly dont mind the licking...I consider them kisses.....but didnt want it to be an OCD situation where those that suffer from it have to wash their hands a hundred times a day! Dont know if dogs have that problem, but wanted to nip it in the bud if I could. Since your dogs seem to do the same, I feel better about it. As to licking feet.....I am too ticklish for that, plus I wear slippers in the house so he doesnt have a chance to do that!! LOL.... Thank you!
There's nothing Juno likes more than a good lick of legs, hands, arms, faces, feet, toes - anything which comes into reach. Her speciality is to remove my perfume from arms, wrist and body lotion from legs. Have to say it's never bothered me but we always stop here with visitors who may not feel the same
Yes, the tricky bit is if you allow it on yourself but don't want them to do it to visitors. Simba is not much of a licker but I would employ the "walk away" method if he was. I have too many familiy members (pretty much all of them) who aren't that dog-friendly and if he started licking them on one of their infrequent visits that would he end of them ever coming here again, I have a feeling.
Very luckily, none of my family care, and neither do my friends (they claim so, anyway). Oh, well, there is SIL, she's not that keen, but manages to survive.....
When we got Obi he was a major licker of hands and clothes - he did it as a greeting thing. We don't like it, so we used the 'walk away' method (combined with lots of rubs and scratches for greeting without licking), and it pretty much brought the licking to an end. Though it does resurface a bit at times of high excitement!
Shadow has this habit that, after a meal, he absolutely must come and lick your hands. I'm anthropomorphising here, but we always say he's telling us how good it was. It's cute, but when I'm trying to work, it gets a little bit much when it goes on for ten minutes!
My Tatze is a real licker, encouraged by my husband, who loves to have his ears and toes washed - bleugh! We have made sure Gypsy isn't a licker as it wouldn't do for a Guide Dog (she could knock coffee out of hands etc) and, thankfully, she hasn't copied Tatze
I can't do face licking,I love Dexter to bits but I just can't enjoy a face lick so I don't let him....doesn't stop him trying to go in for a bit of a tonguey though My Husband on the other hand doesn't mind at all so Dexter isn't deprived!
