Hello everyone I am new to the forum, I have a 5 yr old Chocolate and this pass winter he has been lifting his back paw off the ground when we are outside, he does it if we have been out for while? Anyone have this happen or any suggestions as to why? He had a pinched nerve in his lower spin/hip area summer of 2013 however he healed from it almost perfectly, occasionally he will favour it when we have been over active or on a long walk. He still favours it though when hes jumping, he will tuck it up under himself sometimes. Any suggestions would be great!!
Re: Lifting back leg when cold out Hi and welcome to the forum from me and 19 month old fox red lab Harley I'm sure you have checked his paw and nothing us stuck in it? I would probably get the vet to check it just incase it us connected to the pinched nerve. Fingers crossed it's nothing to worry about
Re: Lifting back leg when cold out Is it happening when you are walking on pavements/roads? Just thinking it could be salt irritating his paw if they have been gritted, although it's strange if it's only the one paw affected. Could be that he has a little crack on a pad on that paw though. We have had this problem occasionally this past winter
Re: Lifting back leg when cold out Welcome to the forum from us, Hattie 7 years and our rescue boy Charlie 4 years. I wonder could it be his dew claws/nails? Just a thought. I hope it's nothing to worry about. Helen xx
Re: Lifting back leg when cold out Hello and welcome from me too. Probably a good idea to have a chat with your vet. Hopefully its nothing too much to worry about, Jac and Lilly
Re: Lifting back leg when cold out Hello, from me and 2.5 year old Dexter,I think it might be worth a check in with vet too, Welcome to the forum x

We have had this problem occasionally this past winter [/quote] My two do this, Willow especially. I bought some wax stuff called Mushers Secret, which you rub onto their feet a couple of times a week and it makes a big difference. It makes your hands feel nice, too It protects against extreme cold and extreme heat, too. Obviously rule out something stuck in his paw first, though.
Re: Lifting back leg when cold out Sorry I missed this earlier. I live in Canada and it can get very cold in the winter. It's not uncommon for a dog to lift their back paw and hop along a bit when it gets cold. Usually it's only for a few seconds until the feet adjust to the cold, then they continue walking normally. I think it's something to do with their circulation adjusting to the temperature. I wouldn't be surprised if this was what was happening in your case. Did you get any ideas from your vet?
