Re: Lovely Chocolate Charlie Perfectionist is one way of putting it, dedicated caring and loveing, another, you do your very very best for Charlie boy, its wonderful, and hasnt it paid off. Be really great if he can swim, lovely for him to have the freedom, and so healing. Love and hugs, Otis and Maggie xx
Re: Lovely Chocolate Charlie Yay swimming!!!! The New Forest is calling Hope he shakes off the stiffness with a bit of swimming. Nothing wrong with perfectionist! If I need serious research done I'm going to hunt you down and get you to do it so I'll know no stone has been left unturned 8)
Re: Lovely Chocolate Charlie That's a really great update Julie, thanks .I bet your vet has never been faced with someone as so thoroughly informed as you are .....I'm still convinced you've found the secret to extending your day by a few more hours than the rest of us.....I don't know how you do it! Xxx
Re: Lovely Chocolate Charlie Good news, Julie. Swimming will probably help Charlie. And there's nothing wrong with being a perfectionist especially as far as our best friends go. It pays to be clued up on what's going on with them. You're a brilliant mum.
Re: Lovely Chocolate Charlie Having a new hip myself, I can say that it may take a bit longer than you expect for the lameness to go away completely Julie. It's not just the stiffness, it's also the learned gait that Charlie has adopted to protect his bad leg. He has to unlearn that. But he will!! Swimming, yes, that sounds brilliant!!
Re: Lovely Chocolate Charlie
Yes, you have at all stages striven for the best possible everything for your dog. Your expectations and standards have been high. And all along this has paid off for Charlie. It's no co-incidence that his recovery has been so good.
Absolutely!
Re: Lovely Chocolate Charlie Thanks for asking Maggie. I got a half baked report from OH. Who left my note to the physio on the table after he let Charlie nick it. : Anyway, although it took me ages to extract the details from OH about what she said it all seems good, and he can swim now. Yippee! But I couldn't get an appointment for tomorrow because they were full. I'll try get an appointment later in the week though.
Re: Lovely Chocolate Charlie Great news about the swimming! That will really build up his muscles again.
Re: Lovely Chocolate Charlie Yes, and he can chase a ball in the pool (has to swim for it) which he is going to love. After two good reports we went wild today - we barricaded half the TV room and let him play with the fire glove. He loved it. Crazy stuff. : ;D This dog needs a mad hoolie a big beach. Well, we're working towards it, anyway.

Re: Lovely Chocolate Charlie Wonderful news, will be lovely for Charlie boy. Julie, Ive been thinking, I was with some fellow dog walkers in the park today, and they were talking about there dogs growling around there children, that they do not allow it. I was wondering about Charlies whining, Otis whines, but look at it this way, he cant talk, and he is expressing himself, its harmless, Otis does it when he is frustrated or sometimes excited, its a means of communicating. He did it because he couldnt get through a gate this afternoon. I just think, and I may be wrong, that it would be wrong to try and supress it in a dog. It would maybe be like teaching a three year old that they werent allowed to cry. Im not sure about growling, Otis only ever growls if he is asleep, and i have to shift him, and sometimes mouths a bit. But growling is a warning to me, and he has never bitten when he has been doing it. I think maybe a better way of dealing with the whining is to find out why he is whining, for example, as soon as I opend the gate for Otis , he stopped whining. If he is whining because he is excited, then a nice calming stroke. Hope this is helpful Julie, Maggie XX
Re: Lovely Chocolate Charlie Sounds like Charlie is coming along in leaps and bounds....figuratively and literally! ;D Glad OH had to do poo duty...for once, right??
Re: Lovely Chocolate Charlie It does seem to be going fine, I'm pretty happy. Next weekend, Charlie gets to jog a bit on a long lead (OH has bought some running shoes ;D ;D ;D). My vet told me that the vast majority of dogs he sees (he runs an orthopedic referral service) were not diagnosed quickly enough, had sloppily done operations, were not controlled afterwards, didn't have a proper plan of rehabilitation and end up being in a right state. The impact of an undiagnosed damaged cruciate, with the dog walking round on it for months, are absolutely awful. Poor things.
Re: Lovely Chocolate Charlie Milestone after milestone now. Freedom in the TV room - and back on the sofa!!!!! He is back in his old "waiting for her to finish work and take me for a walk" position. image by julieandcharlie, on Flickr
Re: Lovely Chocolate Charlie Julie, so interesting what the vet said. Im just about to go fill the hole in the garden , so that Otis dosent get a cruciate injury !God help me if he did , but at least Id have your expert advice and experience ! So great he has a little ore freedom now. Must be quite satisfying you are getting sucha good result and outcome, knowing you have done your very best for him xx
