Ah Frankie,I've had a little experience of this ......Dexter had a couple of episodes when he was 6/7 months ,the vet says it's really quite common and it is when you chat to people. They usually grow out of it.we had a couple of courses of steroid eye drops and then I just used to lubricate his eyes with tears au naturelle if I thought he'd got a bit sandy. He did grow out of it and everyone I've mentioned it to says their dog did too.they just need to grow into the skin of their faces,I hope this is the case for your little cutester x

Oh great thank you that makes me feel better! Hopefully she will just grow out of it. It just looks sore and is obviously bothering her which is horrible :(
She is such a wigglebum when putting in the eyedrops!

    Poor wee mite :(
I hope it clears up like it did for Dexter. It's horrible when they are not well - especially when they are so little.

    Re: Maisies here!

I think that it's common for Lab puppies to have eyes that are a little droopy (ectropion), Charlie did, and it did get better as he got older (although being critical, his lower eyelid really could be a bit tighter, but it's only evident when he is tired these days - we still keep the skin round his eyes very clean though).

Entropion is the eyelid curling inward, and that's not something, I think, that they grow out of and can be corrected by surgery.

Frankie, are you clear which the vet thinks it is? I doubt that a vet couldn't diagnose entropion, that sounds a bit strange.

    Re: Maisies here!

She did say entropion and even drew me a diagram and she did mean the eyelid curling inwards so that the hairs are irritating her eye. The reason it was difficult to diagnose is that when you try and take a close look at Maisie's eye, she clamps it shut so you have to force it open and so it could be where she is just trying so hard to hold it closed it's folding in then. Also she also has a lot of inflammation on that eye which could be pushing the eyelid inwards. She's on antiinflammatory eye drops and the vet is going to look again on Friday. The other thing is that to normally look at her eye apart from the fact she is squinting and has runny eyes the vet couldn't see any obvious entropion. It was only when attempting to look closely but Maisie is such a wriggle bum it was extremely difficult! She's been having eye drops 3 times a day and is getting more tolerant of it so hopefully that will mean on Friday she is easier to examine.

    Re: Maisies here!

Maisie has been socialised with the sounds of tanks and gunfire up on salisbury plain this morning! I dont think they were actually as close as they sounded! She also met some cows. I love watching her amble around off lead. She mostly follows poor Murphy around!
I am a bad mummy and although I weighed out her lunchtime meal and used some of it for a kong for her, i forgot to give her the rest! So she has had a slightly bigger dinner, and I may do a little training with her later to make up some of the rest she has missed.
I am worried about her eye now that it may not be as simple as her growing out of it :(

Just wait and see what the vet says on Friday - a closer look may show that there's no problem.

If she does have entropian (curling inward) it is easy to fix with surgery, which stops the eyelashes rubbing on the eyeball (which causes all the irritation). But it might not be that!

Oh I really can't wait for the vet tomorrow, it's not until 5.45 though because I have work, but poor Maisie's eye is so sore :( looking at it makes my eyes water, at some points she won't open it at all :( whatever it is, the eye drops aren't making any difference, if anything it's getting worse :(

Oh bless her and you. That's a worry. I hope the appointment comes soon for you. Waiting all day is a nightmare. My gorgeous 70kg Newfie had entropion. Not that uncommon with a Newf . He had it corrected surgically. It was a long time ago but it was no bother for him. A very straightforward procedure. I hope she gets sorted soon Emma :)

    Re: Maisies here!

    Thanks everyone.

So Maisie is being referred to an eye (opthalmologist?!) specialist. My vet still isnt 100% sure if its entropion as as soon as you try and look close, she forces it closed and then obviously when you manipulate it it changes how it looks. Although we are pretty sure it is. It will be interesting to see what the specialist says as my vet said the problem with putting the stitch in to hold it unfolded is that she will be growing so fast.
We are carrying on with the antiinflammatory eyedrops which has some painkiller in them, so hopefully that will help her a bit and iv told my vet to refer us to the specialist who can see us the quickest x

    Re: Maisies here!

Right seen the specialist this afternoon.
Maisie does have entropion on her bottom eye lid on her right eye. She was given a local anaesthetic eye drop first which made her easier to examine. She unfortunately also has an ulcer on her eyeball. To begin with we thought the ulcer is a secondary symptom to the entropion, but after having some other oily eyedrops, and the vet manipulated the eye into the correct position, the eyelid stayed put. We waited to see if the eyelid would fold back in but it didnt whilst i was there, and im not totally sure but it looks ok still now. This has made the vet think the entropion may be the secondary symptom to the ulcer, so where she is in pain, she is screwing up her eye which is causing it to turn in as she has lots of skin. But because we have taken away the pain from the ulcer, it is staying put and she is keeping the eye open.
So she isnt sure which it is. I guess I will see what its like in the morning.

Maisie is booked into have full corrective surgery on thursday, but if I think it looks ok still, i can make the decision to cancel the surgery and have another consultation next week, or i can still take her in on thursday and she will have a look before i go and maisie is admitted and if it is still ok then she wont operate.
Shes got new oily eyedrops that lubricate and sort of protect the eyeball.

So i am happy that its being sorted properly now :)

That's great that you are on the right path to recovery. I hope the new eye drops work to fix the ulcer and the lid stays how it should.
