Hi there, anyone experienced above, got any suggestions for dealing with it. He only seems to do it when he's over excited and am trying to keep him calm but ....will he grow out of it do you think?
Re: Male lab puppy keeps humping cushions How old is your pup? My friends lab is 10 and when he was on crate rest he humped his bed constantly. Apparently he only ever done it if he was bored! Harley (17 months old) only humped a pillow once at 9 weeks old. I removed the pillow and distracted her with a toy
Re: Male lab puppy keeps humping cushions He might grow out of it, but it's probably equally likely to become a habit. Charlie humped a few things when pup, I interrupted him, removed the item and now he never humps anything, ever. If you don't want it as a habit, stop it when they are still pups. You might not care though, although I do - I find it irritating.
Re: Male lab puppy keeps humping cushions Oh, I haven't stopped Rolo and he has a session humping his bed everyday. Is it too late to break this habit? He's 5 and half months.
Re: Male lab puppy keeps humping cushions Non of my three boys ever humped before they were castrated at well over a year old. If they had, I would have stopped it and diverted their interest to something else!
Re: Male lab puppy keeps humping cushions I'm sure there are no absolutes, and no guarantees. It seems likely some dogs will hump whatever - or not. It seems sensible, if you don't like it, to distract the pup away from the activity when young though.
Re: Male lab puppy keeps humping cushions Thanks all, your posts reassure me that he's normal....he's just 7 months old and I guess his hormones are kicking in, although i appreciate this might not be 'sexually' motivated, it has only started in recent weeks. It hasn't become a habit (yet) so am definitely gonna work hard to try and stop it. I think it might happen when bored/over excited. I (too) watched the 6 new puppies and us programme with mixed feelings...I think they could have made it so much informative and helpful (opportunity missed) but I was really interested to hear that at about my boys age his testosterone (sp?) levels are 4 times normal so perhaps it may get better as he continues to mature! Certainly I'm sure that he is as lovely and mostly well behaved as he is, thanks to this forum, the labrador site and Pippa's books!!! All of which I have read, re-read and continue to read constantly ...so thanks again for all the inspiration and support you guys have given me before I became a member of the forum. Lisa
Re: Male lab puppy keeps humping cushions Bouncer used to have a great big stuuffed rabbit that he used to take into the garden & hump, but that was the only thing he did it to. After he finaly destroyed it & we threw it away he hasnt humped anything since.
Re: Male lab puppy keeps humping cushions At 5 -6 months Benson started humping. It would be cushions, people, he would even mould throws, blankets into a good humpable shape. This behaviour usually happened when he was excited, early evening, after a walk just when he was particular happy! ;D We always intervened gently and replaced his humping with a quick game of sit..stay...look at me etc...A couple of cushions he was really attracted too we removed entirely with the objective to prevent any association with humping and a specific soft furnishing. His humping has more or less stopped, happens occasionally but not enough to bother us. He is now 15 months and still entire.
Re: Male lab puppy keeps humping cushions Riley was a very mild humper and easily distracted. Obi is an absolute shocker and takes a huge amount of dissuading, often just to restart as soon as whatever game has finished :
Re: Male lab puppy keeps humping cushions Thanks. Welly sounds remarkably like Benson! Will continue to distract/remove sources likely to set it off...thanks again all
Re: Male lab puppy keeps humping cushions Bailey humps his bed, before he settles to sleep (we have vet beds in 3 rooms! ) Typical young man!!!!
